Calling all SPORTS CARDS fanatics: Where can I find packs of Fleer 1986 NBA Cards?

This is the packs in which Michael Jordans rookie card is inserted. I heard packs range from around $250-500 dollars. Anyone?

be VERY careful buying these. i used to work in a card shop, these cards were made back before the tamper-proof packs we have today. these packs can be opened by steaming the glue-seal, and can be easily put back together.

that sounds about right though...$300 max per pack. if you can find an honest person or someone who's just cracked a case (very rare & very very expensive now) at a show or something, go for it.

my friend's dad owned this baseball card store since the mid-80's, we worked there together a few summers back. i asked him about the '86 set, he actually had over 10 complete sets (yes 10 jordan rookies, 10 hakeems, 10 barkleys, etc.), his mother threw them away in the early 90's.

check out The Baseball Card Kid. EXTREMELY trustworthy. I've bought from there before, and I've been extrememly impressed. I bought a couple of 89 fleer baseball cello boxes from there before (you can see the top and bottom card). One of the packs had a Griffey rookie on top! These boxes are never factory sealed, so it would have been very easy for them to find this one and switch it. Also, the card order is well known for 89 fleer, meaning that people can tell which packs have the griffey cards by looking at the top cards. Well, I still got several other Griffeys. I doubt that they have unopened 86 fleer basketball wax on the site, but I know when he travels to card shows he takes it with him. Hope this helps.

just to put the 89 fleer example in perspective:

2 summers ago, I bought 3 89 wax boxes and 2 cello boxes off of egay and local shows:
0 griffeys total!!!!!

I bought 2 cello boxes from bbckid and got 8.

if it makes you guys feel any better, his father's a multi-millionaire. he sells industrial steel rack, the card business was kind of his sideshow because of his interest in collectibles.

his joker son was put in charge of running the store over ten years ago, which used to mean playing magic the gathering (card game) or diablo from 11am to 8pm. man, i wish i could score job connections like that again!🙂

tracking down distributors can be tough, some won't even do business with regular customers. we had a thing called sportsnet, it was a online trading network for dealers, where merchants would chat back and forth what they had to buy/sell/trade. but it requires special equipment and a supscription.

fortunately, the net's brought down some of these barriers. do a search on the net. if you look in a "collector's digest" a magazine from krause publications (one of the most respected) they have tons of ads and info, even in many regular sportscards collector's books you'll see some. a few even have websites, just make sure you shop around for the best price. sorry, i don't follow this stuff anymore. the last pack i bought had a kobe bryant rookie card (chrome), it was the only valuable card i've ever pulled.

there's a cool story about that bbkid guy. my friend's dad told me about this guy. his grandfather had a ton of old tobacco (baseball) cards he inherited, worth a king's ransom. so he sells them, makes a killing, then buys a case (case=many many boxes, box=36 packs) of these '86 fleer basketball cards. needless to say, he's done very, very well.

btw, check out this e-bay auction the holy grail - 1986 Fleer Basketball Box

stonerdave: i used to be hella into sports cards when i was really young. i just thought it would be fun to start up again. i remember going to sports card shops and watching people bust packs like crazy. i had my own little home made store when i was small. i would setup a table and put price tags on all my cards rofl. anyways, i wanna be that guy busting packs, and crap while some kid is just watching with amazement. lol.

thanks for all the info.
