Calling all skiers

I have a friend, brand new to skiing, that wants to get some equipment and go with me this year. I've got my own gear but I really don't know much about equipment other than to get shorter skis for a no0b and to get the bindings and the boots fit properly.

Bingo. Have him/her demo some equipment out, especially boots. Salomon, for instance, makes boots for narrower feet, whereas Nordica is wider.

I'm so excited. Loveland and Abasin are already open (though I haven't gone) and Copper opens on the 5th.

This is me a couple of weeks ago on top of Loveland pass, 21F, 30mph wind (sideways snow), "feels like" ~3F. The run was awesomely fun.

I'm jealous as all get out. I've lived within driving distance of Tahoe my whole life and now I don't. 🙁

same here. I used to be on the Kirkwood Ski Team and would ski every weekends, but now I never get to seeing as how i'm down in sunny San Diego. I miss the snow

He's going to BUY skis so he can go skiing with you? Why not get a full-season rental, or even rent them by the day at a ski shop (not the rentals AT the mountain)

Because he wants to learn and continue. You can get a pretty good deal for secondhand skis.

definatly rent the equipment and get the insurance on them. it's usually only an extra dollar or two and if you break the skis, you don't have to pay for them.

if you need clothing...get burton everything. burton keeps me toasty when i get to goto the mountains and get out of fl 😀

Curious, where and how often will ya'll be skiing?

Crystal Mountain and Snoqualmie Pass this year, probably. If it was up to me we'd be there at least once a week. 😀 I'd like to make my way over the Whistler or down to Tahoe but I don't think that'll happen this year.

Actually, Burton does do well on their clothing line. That jacket you see on me in my pic is a Volcom Omegatron. Couple of seasons old, but I bought it new and unused just before that outting for $99. It orginally retailed for $320 I think. Anyway, it's an AWESOME jacket....but I can't find anything about it online really.

Once a week huh? How much are season passes? (Whistler's like $1000 IIRC)

This is one area where "corporatization" has worked well, because passes here in CO are in the $300 range, and that'll get you on atleast 3 mountains.

Anyway, if you're going once a week it probably WOULD be good for him to get a "season rental/demo" pass, to test out equipment throughout the year and find what works well for him.

Skiing is out. Snowboarding is in.

That's crap. People who treat these winter sports like fads can go wait in the lift-line "fashion runways" at Vail for $80/ticket. Meanwhile, I'll be out enjoying some real snowriding. The lines between skiing and boarding have blurred tremendously with the addition of parks (I don't park ski anyway).

Lastly, I've never seen a boarder barrel down a bump-run the way a skiier can. 😛

Season at Crystal is about $1000 and season at Snoqualmie is more in the $300 range but Snoqualmie doesn't look like that great of skiing. We won't be doing passes this year, probably. I doubt we'll get out there enough to make it worthwhile.

It doesn't sound like you will. Still though, try to figure out how many times he (not you) WILL get out, and see how much it would cost for him to rent everytime. If he plans on going with you all the time, then it may be worth it to him to buy. Otherwise, there's probably rental/demo deals where he can get so many days of demos for some packaged price at a shop.

Is this a guy or a girl friend anyway? 1) It actually will make a difference in the choice of equipment. 2) I've been typing "he" because I hate typing he/she all the time. 😛

He. He'll only be going if I go. I'll check out rental deals and demos for sure then, and see what we come up with.

Good deal. If you guys figure that it'd be worth his while to buy, keep in mind that, if he's truly a n00b, he'll still not have any idea of what he needs, even after a few rentals. He needs to learn to ski first, before he can have a clue of what equipment does what for him.

For that reason, (especially since I assume he'll be sticking to groomies) he'll be best off getting a beginner's line of ski for any given brand (i.e. Salomon's Versa line, or something comparable from any other brand). I can say that Salomon, Rossignol and Atomic all make good skis. Volant and Voekle (while they make good skis) will be less forgiving to a beginner than other brands.

Ski swaps are where it's at....atleast until he knows what he's doing. ...and so are ski schools for that matter, they really do help (just be careful and critical minded of the quipment recomendations instructors will make, since most of them are probably sponsored by one company or another)

Rent first and if he likes the skis, then shop for similar especially its his first time.(Be gentle on him).
