calling all Raid 0 experts(p4p800) NEED MORE HELP!

Hey everyone:
see sig for current config: I have a 2nd Raptor ordered, and I recall I read somewhere that you can add the 2nd drive, and have the raid array build itself?
I wish to ( hopefully) keep my current op sys config: however I know you usually install the raid drivers while loading the operating system.
I have downloaded the latest Intel AA Raid edition, and have read the "read Me", but saw nothing mentioned about adding a 2nd disc and making an array that way. Also, they mention checking to see if the driver is installed- is this (their) primary raid driver?
When I add the 2nd drive, will it automatically be formatted? Will my 3 partitions alredy on my 1 Raptor be carried over to the entire raid volume, but just become larger in size?
Anyone have any info as to how to proceed? I just want to know the proper order of how things should be done.
 
It doesn't work that way. You must back up your data FIRST, then create an array. The OS is installed on the fresh array using the RAID drivers.

back up isn't a problem, however, I read you can add the 2nd drive to an existing data drive, and all data is saved- I will try to find the article I was reading.
 
The P4P800 comes with the drivers you need for raid. I have the same setup, and if I recall, you setup the raid with the intel utility at bios or whatever, setup the stripe size, etc.


I had to put the Asus driver cd-rom into another computer, browse the files, and somewhere you can make an intel AA raid edition floppy to setup the raid for the windows install. In the beginning of windows install it says "press F6 to setup SCSI or Raid," but that didnt even work for me. I had to wait for it to setup some files and then say couldn't find hard drive, select (I forget), then I selected the Intel floppy and it was smooth sailing from there.
 
ok, forgive me if I seem like a tool, but I have never done raid before- Do I set up a blank array, then ghost my current OS, and apps over, or do I have to actually load Windows ( to get the system files installed) then ghost on top of it? Once the initial array is set up, I have to format and partition like usual?

What is the RAID migration feature?

The RAID migration feature in the Intel® Application Accelerator RAID Edition is an advanced software technology that enables a properly configured PC, known as a "RAID Ready" system, to be easily converted into a high-performance RAID 0 configuration by simply adding a second Serial ATA hard drive (of equal or greater capacity) to the system and invoking the RAID migration feature from within Windows* using the Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition utility.

The migration to a RAID 0 configuration is performed without the traditional requirements of an operating system re-install. All applications and data remain intact.

The migration process itself can take up to two hours depending on the capacity of the hard drives being migrated, but the system is still fully functional while the migration is being performed, and it is possible to conduct other activities such as surfing the Web and/or running productivity applications while the system is being migrated. The only limitation is that some disk intensive tasks may experience slower performance during a migration.

The RAID migration feature also features advanced safety algorithms to ensure that an interrupted migration does not result in data loss or corruption. If the migration process is interrupted via a power loss or system reset, the migration will resume from the point of its most recent progress upon the next system reboot."
 
well, seems like I am stuck in an endless loop- here goes:
2nd Raptor came in today, I plugged it in, went to the bios, turned on the raid controller, rebooted, hit Ctrl I to get to the raid bios page. Both drives recognized as non-raid volumes. Now, here's my problem: in the above Intel Document I quoted, it mentions you can load the IAA software, then setup your array from within the software( in Windows). Problem is, when I reboot with the controller turned on, she boots to the Windows splash screen, then re-boots again, over and over. Tried every damn setting in the bios- no difference.
If I try to load the software first, with the controller turned off, I get an error saying the board's chipset is unsupported.
Any suggestions? What if I went the other way, created an array, partitioned and formatted, and then used Ghost to load all 3 partitions? How will I load the raid drivers this way???
 
this was a major PITA, but I finally got her working 🙂
First I had to create a second partition on my storage drive, so I could Ghost the boot partition over, so I could hopefully install the raid drivers there. I did this, then realized I was past the 1023 cyl barrier: so I had to swap the data on the partitions- that was fun. Next, the drive would boot into windows, but hang at the logon screen- there was no icon to choose to logon! After much frustration, I went into fdisk, and chose "rewrite MBR"- it worked.
Then, I turned on the raid controller in the bios, got to windows, loaded the Intel AppAccel program, created the array, and made sure it was recognized ok. Made 3 partitions, then formatted.
Ghost all 3 drives over, but ran into major problems with the 3rd partition ( data)- when I was transferring data, it would take forever, than I would get a "Delayed Write Failed" error ?? After trying all sorts of fixes, I smoked the partition, then did it again, this time making a logical inside of a primary- worked fine after this.
All in all, with all the minor problems I had, it took 2 days of fiddling to get it right, however it is pretty snappy at this point. I transferred a 9 gig folder in about 6 minutes- I thought that was fast.
