Hey guys, just got my radeon 8500 from newegg today.

I popped it in, messed with some of the settings, yadda yadda the norm.

So I go to play tribes2, of course I crank up all the settings with my new "beast" only to find that it sucks. It lags like a bytch.

What the hell man?! Isnt the 8500 supposed to be comparable to the Gef3ti500?

Help me! How do I overclock this thing? I havent seen any tweak bars in the properties area.

Please help me and tell me I didnt just waste my money....

Driver version? OS?

I'm not sure but I believe Tribes2 is one of those problem games for the 8500.

The 6043 and the 6052 are both very good and you can get them at rage3d also try the redsoft drivers the latest XP6.1a are extrenely good. Just remember to delete completely the old drivers; that means deleting them from the registry also. Zardon at Rage3d has a link to an excellent registry tool for deleting old drivers. It is called reg cleaner and with it you can easily remove all drivers from the registry that windows allows to hang around and gum up the newer drivers.

First question... did you just piull out your video card and plop a new one in? (looks like you had a GF2 before)

If so, that's your biggest problem. Probably a couple of reg keys etc... floating around causing conflicts. Generally, if you put in a new video card (which is a pretty pervasive component) and want it to work well... a reformat and reinstall is your best bet. There are apps out there that will partially clean things up, but something is always left behind.

Only bother with the reg cleaner if you are changing driver versions. If you are changing drivers with an ATI card, be sure you:

1) uninstall the previous driver version
2) restart
3) clean the reg and sys32 folder
4) restart
5) install new drivers

My advice...

1) reformat and reinstall of OS etc...
2) install latest via AGP driver
3) restart
4) install 6043 version ATI driver.

BIOS settings... turn off any vbios shadowing, set vbuffer to 128 MB, turn off fastwrites, and AGP to 4X.

Thats absurd, Ive never heard of anyone formatting to do a clean vid card install...

I dont mean to sound rude, but Ive had 4 or 5 Diff nVidia cards in my comp since my last format, no probs what so ever. I dunno, I guess I could use a format...

Man, I shoulda stuck with nVidia I think...

dude, all the nVidia cards use the same drivers and reg entries, so of course they aren't going to cause a problem. i would suggest doing a search for things with "nv" on your hard drive and in the registry. if it looks like it is from an nvidia driver, get rid of it.

People have trouble going from ATI to nVidia too... video card upgrades are one of those things where a format and re-install would help a lot. Little bits of drivers are always left behind.... that's probably whats wrong. The drivers you're using should be no problem.

Just do a search for "Detonator Destroyer" then download and run that application to clear the nvidia drivers.

For Win2K, use the latest beta drivers on Rage3D.com's front page (6043s I think), as they will have the new OGL in them.

I just did the same switch man, I'll tell ya what. You don't have to clean install the OS, but you do need to get those registry keys and left over files out of there. Use only the 6052 based sets (just for conformity so people can help)and I STRONGLY, repeat STRONGLY recommend either redsoft Plutonium X6.whatever set or Omegadrive's 6052 set.

Find them in the forums at Rage3d.com.

You will get it to run smooth, and believe me, once you find the right driver set, you will be golden. It is a sweet card, but I'll tell you, I kinda felt the same way you do at first before I got it up and running right.

:) Good luck, it shouldn't be too tough though.

I went from a GF2 to GF3 ti 200 and just recently to A Radeon 8500. Before I installed the Radeon I downloaded "Detonator Destroyer" and the latest drivers off the ATI site. I removed all the Nvidia dirvers then installed the Radeon. I didnt bother with the ATI drivers on the disc that came with the card just used the ones I downloaded. The Radeon works great with all the games I've tried and the 2D is nice too. I don't play Tribes 2 though.

ATi's drivers have lag problems in OpenGL games because of bugs in their texture uploading routines. There are new 3199 drivers drivers released today which might fix these issues.

Link.
