I myself have not had to reinstall or reactivate Windows XP in 4 years
on my Dell 8200 .. but I do keep a Ghost Image that has been used twice
due to minor glitches that I could not find an easy fix for .. never had to
reactivate (Dell XP Home SP2)

What version of windows is she running btw? At the minimum it sounds like she needs to reinstall her AV software.

You shouldn't need to know that. If you're good enough to not need to reinstall every couple of months you shouldn't need people feeding you with information when they report a problem. You should just know it.

Yeah, don't I know it. It's like the tech support calls where it takes 4 hrs of data gathering to find the problem but the guy wants the answer 5 minutes into the call, "So, what causes this error? You're tech support, you should know!"

Or you spend 4 hours trying to fix a problem over the phone without knowing the CORRECT information. :|

Yea, it took me a good half hour just to get the version of Windows out of my aunt last time she called me for help.

You don't have to be a computer pro, but, like linux, you are better off having a pro setup your machine.

If someone had setup AV/spyware to auto update, scan daily/weekly, put her account as limited, etc. She wouldn't be having the problems. Basic stuff that gets repeated every day here.

The old phrase an ounce of prevention is very true...

Yeah I don't do any consumer tech support. Awful stuff. The rule for my family: It's up to you to get remote assistance working with whatever firewall dell shoved on you. After that you get free tech support. Don't have it working? Don't call me.

I also have the "NO, I will not fix your computer" T-Shirt from thinkgeek that I always wear during the holidays.
