Calling all "Old School" Gamers: How do I clean NES Games?

I just got out my NES and my games tonight. All my games work fine, but Metroid. I have to blow in it and then put it back in the system and it works fine.

I was wondering how I should go about cleaning these games. I use to have a NES Cleaning kit like 15 years ago 😉
anything I can do now? I know you probably can't buy cleaning kits anymore. QTips work?

Keep on blowing! It's the tried and true method of the glory NES days!

Otherwise...

I always just used a q tip like device and swabbed around. real light rubbing alchol did the trick. Evaporates quick too so it wont mess it up.

the magic is not in cleaning it...the magic is in technique when putting it in. Clean it out first...the stick the game in all the way...then pull it out just a little so when you push it down it's touching the front casing. if you get what i mean, this usually works.

I was thinking about doing this, but didn't know if it would hurt the games or not. How "light" should I use?

As I recall... aside from blowing on the bottom part... some people also used a soft toothbrush and some substance, of the cleaning variety.

Do a google search on "cleaning NES carts".

yeah I believe I'll try the Rubbing alcohol/QTip method and let it sit overnight while I sleep.

I was really suprised at how the condition of this system is after all these years. It still looks/works like it did when I actually gamed on it all the time. My Atari is a different story 🙁 RIP Atari...

lick the pinkie finger and then rub it along both sides of the game cartridge edge. Then blow like hell, both the game and the inside of your Nes. Then stick it in and kinda grind it back and forth.

tried and true method for almost 20 years!

My friend had a Nintendo that would ONLY work when you stuck a 1500 watt heater next to it and really heated it up. I shlt you not!

Blow on it! Don't you remeber being a kid?

heh. Those were the good old days. Once I got the hang of using Q tips and water(water won't hurt it if you know what you're doing), it made it much easier. A friend still has NES that blinks no matter how much you clean it. The only way out was applying downward pressure on the cartridge, so with my friend's ok, I ripped off a head from his kid sister's Barbie doll to jam it between the NES and cartridge top. He's still got that Barbie doll head by his NES just for this purpose.

mine only works if you give it a whack on the proper side, depending on the game. just blow in the cartridge 😉 i should plug my old NES back in sometime and see if i can get the beast working properly

Rubbing alcohol and a cue tip. Use the alcohol sparingly, and allow everything to have plenty of time to dry. 🙂

Yup same thing as the kits they sell.
use one side to clean the other to dry.
