I really have always wanted to play the drums, but just got stuck into the guitar position. So I want to have a fairly decent setup with double bass drums, i like the hard core heavy metal progressive doom stuff mostly. Im thinking TAMA and Zil'jin are good I think. Whats a good kit, how much should I expect to pay to be able to play.

I'm sick of going to friends houses and maybe getting 5mins to beat on um, only to have no idea how to keep and drive the rhythm.

alot less about drums available on the net than guitar.

They have a bunch of stuff on expertvillage. Like you I am also starting up on drums after playing bass for 10 years. Might I suggest lessons to get a good foundation?

a double bass pedal might save you some money and room. you may be looking at $500 on a starter set (tama, pearl), the cymbals are what's expensive. Look to spend $1000 on a decent set.

i would definitely start out with a double bass pedal instead of two kick drums, to save space and money. I am a big fan of DW drums, but bring money. Do you have a place to play them? Cause playing rock on drums is LOUD, and a suburban garage may not cut it if you have sensitive neighbors anywhere on the block.

Start out with one pedal, not two; you have to learn A before Z, plus it will help your creativity. You could get a ~1980 Ludwig Rocker for around $400-600 which are great sets for starting out, I played one up until about 4 months ago. Zildjian cymbals are the way to go. http://www.musiciansfriend.com...-Fast-Crash?sku=490025 <--- link for a good cymbal pack.

any more questions, feel free to PM me.

there is no need to spend major cash on drum workshop or custom drums especially if you are learning how to play.
go get a simple 5 piece kit, like a tama or ludwig and go from there.
if you're into that music, yeah get a double pedal, it's there but you don't have to. plus its better to start with the basics instead of playing 16th bass notes.
cymbals are important and sometimes a basic set with come with your kit. thats fine to start out with but you will definataly want to upgrade that if you play out.

budget is everything. you can get a good start for a few hundred.

I'd personally get one of the electronic kits that I can control the sound and put on headphones and run a MP3 or discman through. Get a pressure sensative one for around $1000 would be more than enough.

Are Paiste (spelling? It's been awhile) cymbals not very good any more? I had a kit growing up and I had a couple of those and they were pretty decent, but we're going back 20-25 years, too. (Crap...I'm getting old)
