Calling all mountain bikers! need some advice picking a good bike

Alright I am looking to purchase a mountain bike thats between $200-400, and today I went to two local bike shops and checked out bikes in my price range, and there were two models that caught my eye. One was the 2003 Avalanche GT 2.0, which was on clearance for $240. THe other was a 2003 speacialized hardrock comp for $330. I liked the look of the hardrock a little more than the GT, but I read some reviews about the avalanche and they were pretty good. Should i pick one of these bikes or sould I be looking for something else?

*edit* Also, I had no idea where to look for a bike shop so I went to the one closest to me in Irvine, maybe someone knows a good bike shop where I can get go to get good deal in Orange County?
 
Id go for the hardrock... but i'm a specialized fanboy. Which bike store did you go to? supergo by santa monica might have deals on the hardrock... or any other bike. 🙂
 
your buget is pretty slim and your gonna get what you pay for. that said. TEST RIDE ANYTHING YOU CAN!!!!!!!. thats the only way you will reall know which is better for you. if you want reviews check out
