I am considering buying an LGB train starter set for a christmas tree train with the option of expanding later. I see two types of starter sets avaliable. One is a regular LGB starter set which averages about $275. The other is made by LGB but is labled "Toy Train" and comes in a different looking box averaging about $150. The engines and cars look almost exactly the same. Does anyone know what the difference is between these two. I am figuring there must be some difference for over $100 dollars in price difference but I can't find out what it is. LGB's web site gave no clues. Thanks for any input.

And the only set I ever had was like $50 from KB Toys. HO size.

The "toy" trains are just that. The locomotives aren't built as well and the quality of the stuff tends to be cheaper. I haven't looks at trains in years but I recall that all the LGB stuff was still made in Germany. Whether that's the case or not I don't know. The two series should be interchangeable though. If you're serious about expanding, I'd spring for the LGB. If its something you might or might not do, might as well get the better one anyway. At least then you won't be stuck with toys when the real ones come home.
