I'm planning on running a copy of Win 98SE until I get on campus and can pick up a student edition of XP Pro for 45 bucks. So, Ferengi, have I missed anything? Any coupons, any rebates, any special sales? Am I missing out on a free deal somewhere? Or is this as good as it gets?

why would you buy an lcd from newegg when Dell has far better deals ?

also an AMD on an XPC ? heat issues ?

i'd go with an SB61 or something.

Hehe, you asked for it. You could get a 120gb hard drive, AT LEAST for 80 bucks. Anything more then 20 bucks for a cd-writer is too expensive considering cendyne and such are almost free.

The case is neat, but I woulda sprung for something like this. and an Asus, Abit, or Epox nforce 2 board.

Thats all off the top of my head. Nice system though. :) Mouse should be upgrade to Explorer 3.0 (I love mine) and keyboard perhaps. I prefer naturals anyway.

HD, local, AR deals.... should be able to score an 80 gig for at least $30 less. That's an nForce2 in non-dual channel mode ?

Nice setup, although I would have gotten the Hitachi 17" LCD because it has great dead pixel return policy and DVi Input

Are you planning on running that thing without a HS? I don't think the OEM includes a heatsink/fan.

I'd like to see that 80gb for $30 I've never seen a deal that good..

I like that setup should be a nice machine!

I don't really want a large case because it would get kind of weildy lugging it up and down stairs, not to mention the nearly 500 mile car ride. Plus, it saves valuable dorm space. The cd-writer is a DVD/CD-RW, just in case I feel like watching a movie with surround sound rather than the tinny speakers my TV has. If I could get that cheaper, let me know where, cause that Lite-On was the cheapest one I saw at Newegg. Finally, would that 120 gb hard drive for 80 bucks force me to deal with rebates? I'd rather pay 5 bucks more and not deal with a rebate than go through the hassel. But, even though 80 gb seems like overkill to me, if I can get a 120 gb drive for the same price and without using rebates, I'm all ears.

I just checked Dell, and their prices seem to be within 10 bucks, negligible once shipping is thrown in. I'll go check hot deals for a coupon, but if I don't find one, I'm going with Newegg. Also, on the low end AMD is much cheaper than Intel, so that's why I'm going with the 2500+. The added cost of an Intel chip + Shuttle's more expensive top of the line Intel box would add ~100-200 dollars to the cost, something I'm not willing to do. I don't remember Anand complaing about heat when he reviewd Shuttle's XP line, so I'm going to assume that it is fine.

Edit: Just refreshed Dell'sage, and the prices seem to have jumped up to 20-30 bucks above Newegg.

I'll look into the dead pixel policy, but the Shuttle only has a regular VGA input, not DVI. My guess is that it saves space/money on the motherboard, so they cut it out.

No Fry's in upstate NY. I maintain that they don't exist. :) Anyways, my only local options would be the national retailers, CompUSA, Bestbuy, etc, and it was my understanding that Newegg beat their prices 9 times out of 10.

You're not paying another 5 bucks for not dealing with rebates, you're paying another 20 bucks or so for about 40 less gigs. 80 seems like overkill, but once you hit the dorm networks, it'll fill up like nothing. One of my many new pals had 4 80's on raid 0 and filled that up along with his nifty 200gb.

I merely had a 160, 80, and 45 to fill up. Also, the case I linked you two is only about twice as high but much better and gives you a lot more space to work with. I've never seen a situation in the dorms where that mini-comp woulda saved you that much space since it's going on your table or by your feet anyway. You can't just lug it in a corner because you gotta have access to the drives.

120gb for 95 brand new

Just find a reputable member and you'll be saving a lot more money and spend perhaps another half an hour talking to him.

EDIT: I've lugged my 19" monitor up 2 stories. Trust me, the case is nothing. Being aluminum, the stories are true, it is a lot lighter and easier to carry.

both the athlon and p4 put out something on the order of 60 or 70 watts. its not particularly harder to vent one or the other.
