wait till you actually get the software and try it out with your current rig...if it's not cutting it, then upgrade. Otherwise, save your money for

LOL, you really don't need to upgrade your PC... I've managed so far with a AthlonXP 1600, it's not like going into Engineering requires some incredibly powerful PC.. you'll spend most of your time with pencil and paper.

You need at least a Athlon64 3800+ or maybe a FX55
That with 4gig of ram, 2 Raptor hard drives in raid, etc...

Maybe more RAM.

Everything else is fine.

Programs you'll be running will be Matlab, Mathmatica, and the like. If you're lucky you might have Autodesk Inventor or Solidworks on it, again, you need more RAM but everything else is fine.

You will be perfectly fine. You know, people were running Matlab 10 years ago on much slower machines.

no you don't need a new computer to run matlab. you can run matlab just fine on a P2 128 mb machine. nothing i did on matlab ever felt slow. you just won't be solving the kinds of equations that would actually slow it down. i used it mostly for diffeq.
