Calling all ELITE searchers: I'm at my wits end!

warcrow

Lifer
I've been looking around through New Egg, I/O Gear, and Belkins sites and I cannot (for the life of me) find a KVM switch with the following contraints:

- DVI
- USB
- Audio
- 2 port is fine.
- Supports widescreen (1680 X 1050)
- PC/Mac

I need this so I can switch back and forth between my new G5 and my PC. Please please help me out. I found one (a Belkin) that was $255.

Are these guys really that overpriced?!

Ah yes, KVM switches. The most overpriced computer peripheral on the planet. link Here are some basic models but not what you're looking for I'm sure...

Wow, for $225, I'd just switch the cables manually.

Thats what I've been doing for over a month, but it's not good. It's just wear and tear on the parts, it's annoying, and it's jsut time consuming. 🙁

You know what I would do warcrow?

Just get sperate switches for the different components.

Wow, for $225 I'd just buy a whole new monitor, keyboard, and mouse 😉

I think he means it would be easier to find a DVI switch, and a USB / Audio switch than finding something that can do all three.

As another option for some items, mouse/keyboard can be shared using http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/ over a network.

Max-vista for monitors, not sure of the address or how this works.

And a simple usb swtich <$25 would do it all for you.

I use the input switch on my screens between vga and dvi for 2 comps...

Yes. That would seem to me to be much easier, and maybe, quite possibly, less expensive.

I've never found a kvm switch that didn't seriously degrade the video quality of an lcd (crt's seemed not to suffer as much). Maybe you could use the analog out from one comp and the dvi out from the other and just switch monitor sources? I'm pretty sure the analog out will look better then a dvi through a kvm.

So physically switch the LCD cable but find a switch for my USB, Audio? Do someone have a link to something like this?

Just a thought - what if you ran the audio out of one computer to the line-in on the other?

Also, do you have a DVI extension cable so it's easy to switch the cables, or do you have to go to the back of the computers to change them now?

What KVM switch is it by chance? F1DD102U?

If so, stay away... far far away.

First of all, it is the worst design by far. The power connector is a right angle power connector and when plugged in you cannot access one of the USB ports on it. Second of all, unless your DVI cables have ULTRA small dvi connectors you will have to shave down the plastic bezel to make it fit. Thirdly, it is EXTREMELY picky on keyboards, if it doesn't have a keyboard plugged in that it likes it will flip out at you and beep non stop, even if it is working. We spent $400 for the kvm/cables/adapters and everything so one of our graphic designers could switch between a G5 and G4 mac. After spending 8 hours on the phone with belkin tech support getting the same answer "you need flash the firmware"(they couldn't get the firmware to flash, and recommended me to use a Win 9X machine to do it... still didn't work) over and over again I gave up and returned it.

It says it is MAC compatible, but none of the mac keys work without remapping the buttons in software. It is a horrible POS.

Disregard the above if you are using a different model, but make sure to google before you buy it to be sure.

for 225$ i would get the logitech keyboard that is meant for the playstation2 (very small)(20$) a laptop optical mouse (20$) and use vga for one system, and dvi for the other.

But your tastes might be different...

I'm unplugging them from the back.
