I'm on the phone with Syracuse University's Health Center.... been on hold for 10 minutes so I turn to you guys

Yesterday I had some Burger King for lunch. A big meal, and my stomach felt bloated/full for the entire day yesterday.

Fast forward to today. Diahrea, exccessively. A lot of water comes out, and I mean like in gushes. I've probably went over 10 times already. Stomach pains have subsided a great deal after vomitting my breakfast (cereal & milk) just a few moments ago. I feel a lot better, but I still am concerned. I think I excreted out more water than I actually drank...

Any help on whether I should go see the doctor or just sit home and tend myself? What should I eat? Drink? Help me :(

UPDATE: 11/20/05

I tried going back to solid foods yesterday...but I don't think curry was such a good idea. Last night the stomach pains and diarhea became unbearable. It was almost midnight, I was physically incapacitated by the pain and mentally exhausted. Thankfully I have a roommate/friend who cared enough to drive my to the hospital.

Saline drip for the dehydration, morphine for the pain, and some kind of anti-nausea med... *sigh of relief*
I was admitted at around 1am, left at 5.

Gastroenteritis was the diagnosis. I guess now I have to live off bread and water for a week. Thanksgiving is really gonna suck now :(

Don't eat anythng for four hours after puking, then drink clear liquids, 4 hours of clear liquids, then full liquids (soup, etc, then progress to solid food.

If you puke blood, become dizzy when you stand up or puke for >3 days go to the ER.

If you can keep fluids down and the vomiting/diahrea subside, you'll be okay. If you can't keep any fluids down and you continue to lose them, then you should get help as dehydration can be a serious risk.

if you can keep yourself hydrated then it's alright to stay home as long as you're not puking/shitting blood. if you feel dry or your heart starts really racing, then go to an ER.

Thanks guys. As for calling another ER, I will if I begin to puke/crap out blood.

The vomitting may have been caused by my breakfast, which I wouldn't have eaten if I knew I had a problem.

In 4 hrs I'll start drinking some warm water. Wish me luck

Sounds a lot like ecoli... you may want to hit up the doctor asap for some strong antibiotics.

Get peptobismol if you're tired of the diarhea it'll stop it. And to get rid of the horrid taste drink some sprite or 7up after.

Sip gatorade, slowly. Stick to clear fluids until the diarrhea/barfing stops. Try to get as much gatorade down as you can without barfing. If you can't keep anything down, you may need an IV to stay hydrated.

My parents used to go out and buy me a Sprite when I was throwing up. Something about clear soda helping to stop the vomiting...? I'm not sure, but it seemed to work.

As soon as you can hold it down, definitely start drinking water (or gatorade-- you're losing a lot of electrolytes right now). Then work your way up to things like dry toast and bananas before you eat any real food.

Oh, and it doesn't sound like food poisoning to me-- I've always heard that that's more sudden, and if you had Burger King yesterday and it was food poisoning from that, you should've gotten sick yesterday.

Good luck, and definitely get it checked out if it doesn't stop in a day or so.

LadyBuggy makes a very good point. I had Norwalk virus about a month ago, and it sounds a lot like what you have. Comes on suddenly, bad stomach aches, can't keep anything down/in. It really really sucks. :(

Sounds like a big time food poisoning.

You will probably need a special anti diarrheal. See the doc.

It's called food poisoning and it sucks, and there'a little you can do about it except tough it out and drink fluids.

As for getting antibiotics....you'll start feeling better before the ABs even have a chance to take effect (unless you have AIDS or leukemia or an autoimmune disease or something).

the only thing I vomitted was my breakfast at around 2pm. hasn't happened since then, and my body can keep water now instead of crapping it out.

I will attempt to drink some Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup broth to regain my strength.

Yeah sounds like food poisoning, like everyone else has already said. If it was only water it was probably just Enterotoxic E coli instead of Enterohemmoragic E Coli which would have made you crap blood. It usually takes about 6-10 hours to start after you eat the offending object, but usually self resolves unless youre immunocompromised. In any rate, progress slowly with your diet, eating salty food that you can hold down.
