If I was getting lots of sex, TRUST ME, I would not be on anandtech.

As for fitness, I got a nice treadmill. Parked it in front of the TV and do about an hour a day. If I didnt have the mental distraction I'd only last 15 minutes, and it would be a lot of speeding up, slowing down nonsense which probably wouldnt help me at all.

Also, like other folks have said: You already know what to do. Its not rocket science. The trick is discipline. You need to turn down that fourth Whopper with cheese. You need to get proper running shoes, shorts, t-shirts and actually go outside the house for a while. You actually need to do that 3-4 times a week. And keep doing it. If you are having specific troubles talk to a nutritionist.

Another thing to note: Fat and slob are not exactly the same thing but are often found together. Being fit and slim is just one part of your overall appearance. If you take pride in yourself it shows up all over the place.
Shave every morning. Wash and comb your scuzzy hair. Wear decent clothes unless doing physical labor. Learn how to properly wear jewelery and cologne. (In my opinion, males need very little of either and only on a date or clubbing.)
Its all about self-image and if you care about yourself you wont just worry about one thing, like body fat. You'll try harder on everything and get more motivated in the process.
The exercise endorphins or whatever will help you to feel good about yourself too.

Keep in mind that your weight is 80% a reflection of diet as opposed to exercise. That said, taking the stairs instead of the elevator everywhere, and walking more whenever you're out will make a difference. If you want to get more ripped, you'll have to turn to running and weights.

Just as a FYI changing your workout on the treadmill, like "speeding up, slowing down" actually helps you. If you keep at the same pace/incline your body gets into a rythm, but changing it up makes your body consantly adapt. My trainer has us moving in 2 min intervals (treadmill or precor) that change the speed and incline (and resistance in the precors case). For me I vary from 4 mph up to 10 mph and 0% incline up to 6%, though I usually only go for 24-28 min.

I'm not saying your hour on the treadmill is bad for you in any way, just that by changing up the pace you can make it even better for you.

Watch what you eat, try to avoid having too many coffees and donuts per day (I'm bad for that... there's a Tim Hortons downstairs!) and go to the gym.

that's not always the case.

I can easily have pressing matters to attend to, but find myself on ATOT.

I would love to exercise after work, but I'm usually too mentally drained. It seems like I am more tired after a day of sitting on my butt than I was when I was doing physical labor.

Tips? Hints? Personal experience?

You're in my situation. And what have I done? Eat better. And I refocus my daily stress into lifting at night. Yes, being mentally drained can really make you drag ass at the end of the day, the trick is to get your work in before you 'sit down for the night'. Also, sometimes I will crash right when I get home and then get up at 10pm and workout then. The reality is that I stopped making excuses. That's not easy to do.

I've got a treadmill in my basement too. And I run w/ the dogs, hike on the weekend. When you sit on your ass for 8 hours a day, the rest of your life becomes a lot more focused on staying healthy unfortunately.

i was pretty active in the summer, walking long stretches often and swimming a bit, even kayaking a little. ive just cut way back on my food intake since summer and am finally losing weight, albeit slowly, without being terribly active. start there. after a couple of weeks you get used to it.

Yeah, once you stop making excuses for yourself, it isn't so bad. That was my problem. I go into routines where I work out for a few weeks then I don't, then I do again. Meh.

Get off your lazy ass. I work 12 hrs a day and still find 30-45 min to work out. Add in a 40 min drive one way to work.

I seriously doubt getting winded in less than 1 minute and then going down to a speed where I can actually breathe is helping me.
