caller ID name?

recently 2 people I've called have known before hand that it's me and when I asked them about it, they said it shows my name in their caller id, even though they didn't program my name in before hand.

is this some new thing where the phone company sends your name to callers?

Caller ID displays the name of the person who owns the account. However, some when some cell phones are used to call landlines with caller id, unknown is displayed.

it's not new, that's been around for a long while, at least 5+ years.

I think there's 2 separate services you can get from the phone company, one with just the number, and one with name/number. Not completely sure how that works.
