Does this really work?

I'd like to know before i invest time in getting it to work, otherwise i'll wash my hands of it.

Cheers.

Vita 64 Ultimate here. No problems other than the MP campfest that it's become :(

W@W (Steam) work fine for me on Vista64 Ultimate and Windows7 Ultimate (though Punkbuster kicks W7 as they don't support Beta OS's).

I had a lot of issues with it too, but the recent patches should have everything handled. Sleep doesn't work well on my EVGA x58 and that causes a lot of probs. Also, manually update your punkbuster, that fixed a lot for me as well.

I restored my OS from an Win PE image i created before installing my games.

I remember, for some reason i cancelled the DX setup after restoring COD5. This time i let it run through and the game now works.

Late to the game here, but check your sound settings. They have to be factory normal (sorry, I am at work and don't recall what those settings are.... 44kHz, 16bit, etc.)

I spent a TONNE of time combing the web for that nugget earlier this year. I bet if you change that it will work just fine. The "crash" on loading the game doesn't point to anything like this, it's what got me going.
