I get a voicemail today from a client I have worked for on occasion. It seems a large project was lost due to some computer failure of some sort. The project was being worked on by several people and had not been backed up, anywhere.
The message goes on and on, and gets to the good part: 'Mr. X reinstalled windows and I don't know if he should have done that, but I was hoping you could recover the project since you helped us before ..................."
/end weak rant

I love thes types of calls, honestly I do. For some sick reason I get satisfaction out of idiots losing their projects when they dont backup and have the local IT guru(dumbass in the corner) give it a try and he reinstalls windows. Because we all know when you lose files the first thing to do is reinstall the OS.

Look at it this way - if everyone knew what you did about PCs, you wouldnt have a job.

Be gentle with them. Just because they dont know everything you know, doesnt mean theyre idiots. Not everyone is an expert in everything, even if this is basics to us.

I wonder if doctors call us stupid behind our backs too. :p

Very true, but if the person knows that the shit should be backed up and doesn't, they're lazy...IDIOTS:(

Everyone of my clients are told to back up what's important to them.
Do they do it most otf the time nope:music:

That is why I am ranting here /shiftyeyes
:p

I get to listen to MR. X tell me about the blue screen or ntldr is missing ad nauseum over the phone, but if I work it right at least I don't have to be there.

If you don't already have data recovery software you use...
Thanks N7. I have several tools to choose from. they have not called me back yet, so I get to tell them to unplug the computer and bring it to me.
This will cause more drama, since they have probably already started rewriting the documents and "need" the computer. There must be 10 computers there, LOL!
The second cup is in and starting to take effect:sun:

We tell our users if they have any important files, or projects they are working on to save it on their network shares since we do regular back up on our servers.

You know, if these are small sites with less than 10 people, Tell them to invest $800 ($500 for the HP home server the rest for your time) and set them up a home server and use it to create backups for them and allow them to have a network share to store stuff.

And you can administer it remotely.

Ok I called them back, they had not returned my message. They had loaded the OS, applications and some content. I sent the person down to turn it off and take it away from the users, but they are "too busy today" to bring it to me.
I think after this one I will sever my relationship with them as they are 20 miles away over a toll bridge, and more clueless than anyone else I have ever dealt with. It is a collective thing that truly boggles the mind.

wow that is terrible! This is a reason why I try as much as possible to block booting from CD on all our machines.

Nobody backs up and nobody ever will backup. It's a law.

As already suggested, put in a Windows Home Server and it'll take care of it automatically and warn all of them if their PCs aren't getting backed up. Amortized over a five-year lifespan, the cost is $10 per computer per year for daily full image backups. You can do a full recovery over the phone unless they need to replace their hard drive.

We are not paid to be smart, we are paid to tolerate stupidity.

Said that to my coworker the other day, it seems to sum up the IT experience.
