California vehicle registration fee calulations?

Does anyone know where to find information on how vehicle registration fees are calculated?

I found basic information on a car, but since I have a pickup and that requires a _COMMERCIAL_ registration, that's an extra fee that I can't find. There's an addition cost for vehicles that weigh over 8000LBs unladen, I can find that info, but that doesn't apply and doesn't include the cost of being commercial in the first place. And there's nothing about all the little taxes tacked on to it. The DMV's webpage seems like they don't want you to even know what you should pay.

Axles have nothing to do with it.

My dad's dad got pulled over (long time ago, well before I was born), he had a camper and was on a trip. So he put some tools in the back incase they broke down. He got a ticket for not having a commercial registration. He said "It's not a commercial vehicle", the cop pointed to the tools in the back.

That's why you'll notice that by default cars and SUVs are given #LLL### plates (non commercial) and trucks are given #L##### plates (commercial) regarless of what the pickup's size and purpose is.

Heh, the deal with it is that it isn't a "new" tax or an "increase", they removed the VLF offset, which was a discount from the VLF.

...and my registration is 9 days past the increase date.
