Two pieces of news for Californians and the people who love or hate them.

1. CA tax rates going up

Congratulations to California liberals who were advocating for higher taxes, you got your wish. Now even "rich" folks who make as little as anything above zero have their marginal tax rates going up (25% in the case of the lowest bracket), and the new top tax bracket of 9.55% kicks in for single filers at $46,349 rather than $47,055. Glad to see that you're making all those "rich folks" making in the mid $40s pay their fair share of the burden.

2. NUMMI joint Toyota-GM plant to close

Another good piece of news for California liberals. You'll be reducing your state's carbon footprint from manufacturing now, and creating space for all those "green jobs" to come in the coming years.

Don't you mean congratulations to California conservatives who advocated for an always balanced budget that would force pro-cyclical tax increases...and then went ahead and pushed for a tax cut early in Gov. Schwarzenegger's term making sure the budget would be blown to bits if there ever was a downturn?

Look, here's the bottom line. Toyota is hurting, badly, very badly in north america. They are getting killed from their rapid expansion and sitting on capacity that cannot be used and is still not even fully capitialized.

California's climate coupled with the GM fiasco was enough for them to cut their losses and pull out, they had to. Toyota is desperately trying to stop the bleeding as are the other manufacturers save for Hyundai and kia.

I wouldn't be surprised it Hyudai/Kia pick up the NUMMI plant for next to nothing and use it to build their own cars. Penske might do the same for the Saturn brand it now owns. Yet another possibility is one of the Chinese manufacturers getting it and using it to gain a foothold in the marketplace.

The point could be made that it's just cheaper to build elsewhere than be burdened by CA's taxes, high cost and business environment.

While that is true as other manufacturers have found for high volume low margin products (such as economy sedans that were made at NUMMI for years) it's less expensive to build them here than import them (from overseas).
Hyundai/Kia already have their NA headquarters in Irvine, it would be a big PR win for them to take over NUMMI. Perception is a huge thing when it comes to auto manufacturers, just ask GM about that.
If the economics support it, I would bet they would.

One sure fire way to make business and people flee your state is to raise taxes. It's a downward spiral. Higher taxes = less tax revenue, raise them again = even less revenue.

this is why places like the dakotas have people rushing to live there, because the taxes are so low.

There is some things taxes simply cant fix. Like for instance the weather ;D

In general people are moving south in this country. This is partly due to an aging population and people not wanting to deal with the wrath of old man winter. And if anybody feels the wrath of him it is North Dakota.

You do as you wish, I'll look at them more favorably.

You like Toyota for closing the plant? Why, do you hate the workers or something?

They closed their only plant in CA only to move the jobs to Texas. The jobs didn't all move out of the US but instead most were moved to a more business friendly state.

'Busines friendly' = more for the rich, less for the poor, let's return to low-wage rich and poor and attack the middle class some more. Lousy position ot have.

He says this as the rich leave with their plant to Texas taking their middle class jobs with them. Leaving the previous middle class workers out of a job.

Seems like you are trying to prevent the loss of middle class jobs by creating a climate that creates middle class job losses. Makes sense. Like in another thread how one of the more intelligent posters on this board pointed out "protecting people's freedoms by taking them away?".

it's all part of their quest to take as much money as possible from ALL working people and hand it over to people that won't work. The word is out. if you have a small or medium size business in calif: shut down and get out. Toyota will relocate to other states where the reckless liberals are of no consequence.

When the unions attempt to run accompany, they are not doing it for the average worker.

Toyota did NOT like CA business climate and/or the workforce. For them it was better business strategy to move to a place that was not going to ram labor regulations and taxes down their throat.

CA did this one to themselves, no one else.

An prime example of social engineering: cutting off the nose to spite the face.

wrong, their only problem is that they have to compete with countries with national healthcare. you can't blame the uaw for that fundamental issue.

and of course there are the prius driving yuppie dems to blame. you know..the kind that buy fair trade coffee to favor one farmer over another. but an american worker with healthcare..f*ck them!
