California smog laws, got a question

My registration was due back in June with my biennial smog check. I paid the registration fee before the deadline and attempted to have my car smogged but I failed. Of course they said they won't send me my renewal sticker until I pass the smog check. Needless to say it's already October, I have no money left to attempt another fix for a 3rd retest. I'm driving around now with my old sticker. I know that if a cop sees it, he can pull me over and write me up. But from that risk aside, what else can happen to me? What if I just drive VERY unfrequently for the time being until I can get more money to fix my car (which might be until early next year), will the DMV say anything?

Hmm, I want to say that they can impound your car for driving with an expired registration. Not sure on that tho.... I got a ticket once for an expired tag. I swear, if I wasn't so stupid I'd quit getting stupid fix-it and parking tickets:eek:
