Re: California premium gasoline octane change

Please be aware that the octane for premium gasoline shipped through California?s common-carrier pipeline system is changing from 92 to 91 octane. As a result, virtually all California premium gasoline, including 76 premium grade gasoline will be 91 octane starting August 1, 2001.

Please contact your district manager if you have any questions during the conversion process. In addition to the information below specifically about the change, attached is basic information about octane from the American Petroleum Institute.

Will the new 91 octane premium gasoline continue to meet all state and federal standards?

Yes, all 76 gasoline grades will continue to meet California?s cleaner burning gasoline standards.

What will happen at my site?

The process will vary by site depending on whether your site has two or three underground gasoline tanks.

Tosco authorized contractors will begin work on June 25 to relabel the dispensers to 91 octane. If your site has two underground gasoline tanks and requires adjustments to the blend valves, contractors will also temporarily change the mid-grade labels to 88.5. This process will ensure that our dispensers are in compliance at all times during the conversion.

Is 91 octane adequate for high performance vehicles?

Tosco anticipates 91 octane gasoline should meet the needs of almost all premium 76 gasoline customers.

Why is 76 premium gasoline changing from 92 to 91 octane?

The octane for premium gasoline shipped through California?s common carrier pipeline system is changing from 92 to 91 octane. As a result, virtually all California premium gasoline, including 76 premium grade gasoline will be 91 octane starting August 1, 2001. We expect that most if not all premium gasoline sold in California will change to 91 octane, but we cannot speak for our competitors.

Why is the pipeline system changing?

This change is being made to insure adequate premium gasoline supplies as it becomes more difficult to meet the more stringent California clean air standards.

Will 76 regular and mid grade gasoline octanes change?

76 regular and mid-grade gasolines ? 87 and 89 octane respectively -- will not change.

During the conversion, the mid-grade dispensers will be temporarily relabeled to 88.5 octane. This is a precautionary measure to ensure that our pumps are in compliance with state and federal laws at all times during the conversion process. The mid-grade will go back to 89 octane when the equipment conversion is complete.

Will 91 octane gasoline be less expensive?

We will continue to price our gasoline competitively. We cannot speculate on what prices will be.

What if I have a vehicle that needs higher octane gasoline?

For those few vehicles that do need higher octane, 76 offers a 100 octane racing gasoline at certain locations. To find a station that carries racing gasoline, call 800-345-0076. (A list of racing gasoline sites is to follow).

What if I experience knock when using 91 octane?

Knock can be caused by a variety of circumstances. Make sure your vehicle is properly maintained to ensure optimum performance. Maintain normal driving habits. Don?t put abnormal strains on your vehicle.

Is 76 gasoline guaranteed?

As always, 76 gasoline is guaranteed. In the unlikely event that you experience any kind of trouble with the regular use of 76 gasoline; just call our toll-free customer service line at 1-800-527-5476.

Is this true? or is it just a rumour?
