i need to drive up from los angeles to san francisco either tomorrow or monday. i am thinking about going tomorrow (sunday), but my bro-in-law said there is probably going to be mad trafffic, and that monday would probably be better on the roads. i was thinking that it would be clear on the roads tomorrow, becuz its new years day, and since monday is an observed holiday, ppl will travel on monday instead. in your opinion, would it be better to make the trek from LA to SF tomorrow or monday?

either day will be the same, because of the weekend and holiday traffic. check to see which day will be raining, that might be a determining factor as well.

if you leave REALLY early on either day, the traffic won't matter. (early as in... by 7am.)

Neither. Heavy rain forecast Sun & Mon, clearing Tues. Better go Tues.

Go anytime Sun, or after 9:00 a.m. but before 3 p.m. Mon. BEst of all go Tues.

You can take 101, the scenic route, through Santa Barbara, Salinas, San Jose.

Or You can take 5, the straight shot but sort of dangerous over the grapevine then easy to fall asleep at the wheel but faster route.

Or You can take 101 to San Luis Obispo, then take hwy 1 up through Big Sur, Santa Cruz, then over the mountain to 280 & on to SFO. Most scenic but real slow, maybe 3 hrs longer than via 5. If time permits & you go Tues that'd be a treat.

thanx for the details scott. i'd like to be there by monday, so i can do some shopping before moving into my place. tuesday i gotta roll into work, so unfortunately, i must hit the road by monday latest. i'm not looking forward to the boring friggin drive, but thats why i thought it'd be better to leave on sunday, so i can take breaks and stuff.

The I5 is not like that unless you are driving tired which is a bad idea. The great thing about the I5 is it's a straight shot mostly and you can go about 90 on it the whole way without trouble (most of the time...just keep a good eye out)...this is assuming there is light traffic so that's probably out for the weekend.

He could go the really really scenic route and take Highway 1.

WTF takes the scenic route, are you mad? I5 down the middle, between the sh1t smelling field is the way to go. I'd start the trip in the late evening for the least traffic.

..I'am in daily city/sf. Lots of wet weather here wit more on the way. You might be driving into a storm.

Whatever you do, do NOT get a ticket for going 100+ anywhere near Coalinga.

Lol...I probably know the cops there. It's like 40 minutes from here. I5 doesn't really go through Coalinga...you have to take the 198 farther to get to it. It's between the I5 and the 101...though it is closer to the I5.

Edit - I believe it's in Fresno County...so if you had to go to court it's not THAT bad....although I do not like Fresno that much.

i've heard that the roads are usually pretty clear when it rains... is that true?

not really. i drove in a pounding storm once over the grapevine and there was still cars on the road, but everyone actually slowed down. if you have to go, you go. i had no choice.

i don't think either day is going to matter. however if you're moving into a new place and starting a new job, the extra day would be nice.

your other issue is going to be 152 if you're going to go 5 --> 152 --> 101. i hate that freeway if it's backed up at the 152/156 merge/split/turnoff/merge of death. that's where it will go from two lanes in each direction to one lane and is usually backed up.

Exactly. I hate that 152.Its 46 miles from 5 to 101 and if you have a truck in front of you, it can be pretty miserable.
Note - Make sure you don't drive too crazy, cops are on the prowl right now.
