I couldn't find this posted previously. I searched for "California" and "Video" and "Game". I can't believe this went unnoticed.

CNN Article
California's state senate passed a bill Monday that requires retailers to display signs notifying parents of the ratings systems for video games.
What do you think of this? Frankly I don't really have a problem with it. It's not like they're in any way stopping adults from buying the game, just stopping 14-year-olds from slipping the latest GTA past their overly religious parents.

Err, you don't have the ratings on the box and explained on the box then?
We do in the UK.
I don't really get what this law says you have to do....tell people what a rating of M means? Because people can't work out it stands for mature?

Why not just have a greeter that gathers people in a group as they enter then lectures them on the dangers of well, everything.

Yeah, boxes here in the US do have ratings on them. I think the law just requires the actual store selling the games to post some type of sign that explains the ratings system, and makes parents aware that it actually exists.

Um... that's fine. I think we have signs in the ticket booths that explain what G, PG, PG-13 etc... means. Go for it I say.

We have it on the box. Been that way for quite some time. It's just it's small and inconspicuous, and as such kids have been able to hide the ratings of games from their parents by holding it where the thing is, putting stickers over it, etc. Many parents know, but many others don't, and since very few retailers even mention the rating system they don't learn until Nightline does another in-depth report on GTA3 and the kids who play it.

From what I understand this law will force retailers to put up large signs stating what the rating system is, in places where it can't be missed.

iv had a couple friends who've worked at game stop(they owned anybody walking in) and they would try their hardest to tell the parents of the kid who was buying GTA:vice city about what went on in the game.

"to get your health back in this game you have to buy a prositute and take her to a back ally" "you complete missions by killing people" etc etc iv heard some great stories of the kids trying to talk their way out of it, as if the parents would still buy it for them.

also on a side note, one of my friends, her little brother, has been getting violent lately. so they(the parents) dont let him play GTA:vice city anymore. LOL  he was a brat anyway.

Please don't assume that my endorsement of this bill means I agree with the belief that violent video games breed violence. They don't. Bad parenting breeds violence. (As do certain mental illnesses, but that's negligable)

I simply believe that parents should know what it is that they're purchasing for their child. Parents should be able to raise their kids how they want (within reason) and be able to make informed decisions.

Target ID'd me for Castle Wolfenstein.
Heh, I never got IDed for Diablo II or the LOD expansion (both rated M) at Wal Mart and I was 14. Funny thing is that I looked about 12.
