"A higher power" is a very vague phrase, and not necessarily religious. The mere fact that this guy got his butt thrown into the slammer against his will suggests a higher power exists (in this case, a judge).

Well he shouldn't get the money, the victim of his crimes should get it.

I have to say, this is what the war on drugs gets us. A one year prison term for having a drug on him. How much does that cost? Then ordered back for 100 days after AA. It is such a wasteful dumb use of money to me.

A shit load of people get sent to AA from the courts day in and day out. I'm curious to see what other option or program they come up with. This sets a precedent, so it might take hold.

Not sure why, but I like you.

Well, before, at least here in Va., the courts sent you to 2 programs, both 9 weeks long. 1, a 400 dollar government *school*, and 2, a no fee church.
Guess the courts will just have to, umm--, wait for it, --- wait for it,----
Set up another 400 dollar program!! :awe:

Father, forgive them, for they know not what they have done.

No, our programs are not.

Our required program is not a 12 step program. ( We don't actually have a required program per se. There are numerous programs offered by licensed professionals that one may choose from, and this is in a small community.)

Fern

Well, you're lucky.

In a lot (most?) places, 12 step is the norm.

The obvious option is for the courts to start embracing the secular A.A. rip off organization. A.A. is the biggest and baddest, but S.O.S. should do the trick as well.

Also, A.A. has agnostic and atheist groups since each group is autonomous so long as not affecting A.A. as a whole, but I guess this judge was too stupid to point that out to the addict in the article, and the lawyers didn't notice either somehow. I find that odd.
