California fires raging strong.

An admittedly selfish personal tragedy for me here is that the poor air quality from the wildfires is killing my garden. I grow a garden every year, but it had been a high point for me during all this COVID bullshit that being home had allowed me to grow one of my best gardens ever. Especially my tomatoes. And now in 2 days, right at harvest, I'm watching them all die off despite my best efforts to save them.

Oh wow. I had no idea it'd be so bad as to prevent photosynthesis. That's crazy to learn.

Global warming chickens are coming home to roost 🙁
Uh, come November let's vote in the Democrats. All the Republicans claim global warming is a hoax.

It's depressing when I see the roads filled with cars. Mostly I don't because I'm SIP very strictly.

My tomatoes are not dead, but they've been dying for weeks now, before the fires. I was thinking of spraying the plants with water yesterday to wipe off the ash but realized that the ash is going to continue, so won't bother until this stops. Water on the plants will encourage mildew, so am hesitant to overdo that.

AQI right now at 238, the worst I've seen it in years. I'm staying indoors today.

yea, i'm usually at around 100k lux at noon on my light sensors in the greenhouse. just looking at the data, the heavy smoke day was about 20k lux.
@Muse the ash is caustic, if its mixing with a small amount of moisture at night, it could be killing the plants. i have been washing it off. of course, we had to cover all our plants for 2 days due to near freezing temps. i think we saved most of it. we only have about 2 or 3 weeks left in our growing season.

OK, I'm going to spray the plants today. I will follow that with a spray of baking soda (2 tablespoons added to a gallon of water and ~1/4 teaspoon of surfactant soap), to fight off mildew.

Ach! Smoke from fires in Northwest Oregon, blew out to sea, then headed North straight back into Washington. The sun is obscured. One more day they say. I really feel for the people actually living in the middle of all of the fires.

Raking is fine but why do people use that as an implied excuse to ignore climate change which is the larger problem?

Reports from our own military say climate change is one worlds biggest threats

I feel so guilty driving recently, been biking everywhere. Now air quality sucks, so I am sitting home.

The ash is already very basic in PH so i dont think mildew will be a problem as long as they have a chance to dry off a bit before the sun sets.

I put on my N95 and went out in the yard an hour ago. My car is covered in ash and I need to do some sweeping before it rains Tuesday (it might some), so wanted to put car on street for that (it's in driveway). No parking on our street today, which never happens. Not a single spot. Looks like everybody's staying home. I have used my car twice in last month to take ~20 mile trips to keep it running, that's all. No biking at all. Rollerskate daily with N95 for exercise, but not last 2 days, the smoke/ash just too intense. Gonna do the bike trainer thing in the house today for first time in a couple weeks.

Edit: 11:34AM. Just checked. The AQI has been climbing all morning. Current reading 241, time 11:00AM PDT. Middle "Very Unhealthy." No way I skate today. We have wildfires all around, about 4 of them, some of the smoke is blowing down from Oregon.

Because it's "An Inconvenient Truth." American's are spoiled to a considerable extent.

Americans are polarized. If our opponents said it - then it must be false.
Besides, cannot hurt big business. It'll trickle down any day now.... yup, any day....

Washington State University (WSU) has suspended operations due to the smoke. Clackamas County Oregon has announced a curfew this evening.

My response to two deplorable’s I know.
Have we ever raked forests? Do you ever remember anyone raking a forest when we were kids?
Follow up with “Do you want your taxes to pay people to rake the forests?”

Another argument for the obliteration of the electoral college.
Trump is all about fanning the flames of division. He figures it's his only hope. Get people to think badly of his opposition, any dang way he can. Nothing else on his agenda whatsoever... well, besides eating, playing golf and responding to stimuli. You know, when you're president you get constant stimuli.
