Known for its liberal politics, Berkeley has racked up a long line of firsts over the years, from taxing sugary drinks to ditching Styrofoam takeout containers.

City officials are now considering another novel plan: putting stickers on gas pumps citywide to warn consumers that burning fuel contributes to global warming.

honestly thought it was going to say "known to the state of california to cause cancer and birth defects"

colour me surprised.

When a liberal sees a sign like that he thinks to himself, good reminder. In this world full of environmental problems the one thing I can do to make a difference is adjust as best I can on a personal level.

When a conservative sees a sign like this he says to himself, those fucking liberals are trying to guilt trip me about using gas.

So when are they going to finally give up on this global warming bunk of lies intended to line the pockets of politicians and special interest groups?

Ubiquitous reminders are useless; they become part of the background noise. Gas pumps already have a bunch of warning labels no one reads. One more will be one more no one will read.

Unfortunately true, mostly. Some people will modify their behaviour, maybe even a significant amount, but that's not a reliable way to deal with such an issue. To really deal with this issue takes some Legislation and that takes some Politicians with a spine, good luck. :D

I don't know why you call yourself Zaap. Your brain isn't producing enough voltage to light an LED. But I appreciate your efforts to save energy that way.

Yes. Lets kill a bunch of trees to make some stickers. We don't need no stinking oxygen.

Fixed that for ya.

I'm pretty sure the stickers aren't made from trees and have an environmental impact far below that of a gallon of gas.

The gallon of gas will still be used and consumed without the stickers, but with them we are adding additional polutants and waste to the environment that would not otherwise be caused.

Why? Nobody reads stickers on gasoline pumps.

Exactly, I dont even know what stickers are currently on the gas pumps. I just pull up, throw some gas in my car, and get out as quickly as possible. This will be one more sticker that will go unnoticed.

I am one of the few liberals I know of who finds conservatives to be generally quite intelligent. Naturally, as with everything, there are going to be exceptions.

But if you look at the responses I got, their obvious viciousness, the level of attempt to smear, you will see, if you have any self awareness of what you yourself feel when you react that way, that there is nothing there at all but guilt. The childish defensiveness, the need to smear and deny, etc, are all indicators of folk who are miserable in their own skin.

They were put down as children, made to feel guilty and worthless, and are now looking only to get even. This sad state of affairs, so deeply buried in the unconscious, includes the unconscious wish for self destruction. They are punching their way though life in a paper bag, and they don't just don't see stickers, they don't see anything that suggests the damaged state of their egos.

They have lost their way and their true selves and so see everything as an attempt to steal. Every attempt to rectify their pathetic state is ineffectual because they can't allow anything to affect them.

They have no hope for themselves because they believe, unconsciously, they don't deserve it. But they do, because we are all the same, and I know who they really are. They are that fantastically wonderful creature that is me.

All that shit they dump on me they do so because they know it fertilizes the roses they smell in my garden.

What a waste of money...

Not too far off the mark.

I'll start this by saying that I am usually pretty liberal…

However that reference as to how liberals think is off the mark. No matter what, we're still going to fill up our car with gas and drive to work tomorrow. And when we need to go somewhere with friends we will have them drive so once again it makes us feel better, but it's not really doing anything since either we drive or they have to drive.

This seems like one of those things that leads to the dumbing down of the population. If the label on the gas pump warns that it causes global warming, this implicitly means anything without that label does not.

Suppose you're in a grocery store and you see two cereal boxes. One of them says fortified with iron. The other does not. What is the first thought that pops into your head? One is fortified and one is not. Of course, you don't actually know that. It's possible that both have iron added to them, but only one of them has a label, and the label itself leads to incorrect conclusions about things that do not have the label.

- Cigarettes / Cigars have warnings; people still use them
- Fast food places note their caloric content; people still eat there,.. and we're still fat!
- Gas pumps should warn of global warming climate change; ,.. I am going to have to say people will still buy gas,..

:hmm:

,... especially in a state were it's cities' public transportation is total shit to begin with.

This is a waste indeed.
