SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California state government departments will be prohibited from selling or displaying items with an image of the Confederate flag under a bill that passed the Assembly on Monday.

AB2444 by Assemblyman Isadore Hall, D-Compton, is headed to the Senate after passing on a 72-1 vote. Hall introduced the bill after his mother saw replica Confederate money being sold at the state Capitol gift shop.

He called the image a symbol of racism meant to intimidate.

So the mother sees educational reproductions of confederate money, gets offended and now it has to be banned.

The meaning of the First Amendment means that you have a right to be offensive. We cannot white-wash history and hope it goes away.

And repeat after me. The Civil War was not fought SOLELY over slavery. The South did not suceed JUST to keep slaves. (edit: capitalized SOLELY and JUST because somebody didn't notice it. Yes slavery was a part of it.)

"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or destroy Slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it, ..."
-Abraham Lincoln

I think it is stupid and counterproductive to try and ban the sale of the confederate flag or any other flag.

Repeat after me though: the south seceded because of slavery. I have no idea why this myth that it was over something else keeps circulating. The evidence is overwhelming.

If I don't like it then it should be banned. Typical mentality of many on both the left and the right, now a favorite mentality of the politically correct crowd.

Another AT P&N misleading title.....

This is just a feel-good bill, since all it does is ban .gov departments from selling or displaying the flag, not citizens, who are covered under 1A.

How is this a blanket ban as implied by the thread title? The first line of your article: "California state government departments will be prohibited from selling or displaying items with an image of the Confederate flag under a bill that passed the Assembly on Monday."

It sounds like only government departments in California will be prevented from selling Confederate flag images. It sounds like any private seller is free to sell as many or as little Confederate merchandise as they want.

Are the people who work in and operate those departments not citizens?

"feel good" bills have consequences, and are usually a really bad idea, just as in this case. It's another example of people who want to codify their perceived right not to be offended into law.

The government is not like a private entity, it belongs to all of us (in theory anyway) and represents all citizens -- including those who want to buy confederate flags.

Can someone explain to me why a California state capitol gift shop would be selling replica Confederate money anyway?

Its not like California was a confederate state...

When they are working in a capacity for the public, their freedoms are subject to regulation, even more so than all of ours.

Certainly you see the difference between work and private regulations.

Nobody is saying you cant buy them, they are saying you aren't going to be able to buy them at the gift shop on the way out from Yellowstone.

This is a worthless bill that I support 100%, because it meant this insane legislature was tied up doing something other than further restricting our firearms rights.

Where is the American civil liberties union when you need them?

The government doesn't have any civil liberties. If the People say to their government, "No, we don't want you selling symbols of slavery," the government cannot say, "Well you can't tell us what to do -- we have rights that your wishes can't usurp." The government exists only to serve the People, it has no rights of its own.
