Call this guy and set up an appointment.

At first it seems really expensive, until you see the results. It is simply amazing.

What kind of TV?
What Brand?
How is it coming out worse?
Are you changing the settings in the service menu or the consumer menu?

I was really fortunate that a local ISF calibrator offered too calibrate two inputs for $100.

The only 3 inputs we ever use are:
HDMI - DVD Player
HDMI - HD DVR
GameCube not sure how it's connected, RCA?

We calibrated both HDMI inputs and we can really tell a huge improvement.

One will see only a very limited improvement using the user menu settings.

To truly get a TV looking it's best you need to have it ISF calibrated... or buy the equipment and learn to do it yourself.

I found a local ISF calibrator who who did 2 inputs for $100.

The before and after results are definitely noticeable.

Like day and night, isn't it?

When I had mine done I could not believe the difference. Simply amazing.

It's expensive, but worth every penny.

A full calibration is like night and day.

However with some research and knowing how to operate the service menus you can get pretty close with massive improvements. The only thing that needs expensive equipment is greyscale/color.

Anybody that owns a HDTV should automatically run out and buy AVIA or Video Essentials. Not only do they have good patterns, they're good learning tools as well. My next HDTV I'll be getting the HD Video Essentials.

I should do that... I've done just a little bit of playing with the settings, but I still find shadows to be just a little too dark.

It's amazing how little contrast you need to get a great picture. For tube TVs, high contrast will burn out the bulb faster, plus on projection there's a chance you can get burn in. I have my contrast set at about 21, and it looks great. Going by the AVIA disc, I seem to have some geometry issues that crop up over 14, and that may be due to an inadequate power supply. It's the Insignia brand from Best Buy, so it wouldn't surprise me. Going by the AVIA disc, everything but the Contrast settings were pretty accurate straight from the factory, other than the brightness, which is set at 82. I don't have access to consumer reports, but I've heard second hand that the model I have (a 4:3 HDTV) is supposed to be second to one of the Sony's in terms of picture quality. Wish I had the cash to get the sucker calibrated for even better viewing :( My old 19 inch tv (all co-ax, not even composite input) looked a LOT better after calibrating it, though I have issues with faint lines on the left side for years. It's a cheap RCA, what can you say?

I keep wanting to have my TV calibrated (professionally), I've done a the usual user mode stuff and a little in the service menu but I'm sure a good calibration would be awesome.
