Calibrate Viewsonic Q20wb?

I'm not sure if this is the place to ask this, but I'm using my Viewsonic Q20wb for photo editing. I can't determine what kind of panel it is, though I suspect it's a TN owing to the price. I tried to calibrate it with a Spyder II colorimeter with no success. The Spyder consistently generates a profile that sets a gamma of 0.5. I've upgraded software to no avail. Sypder's (Colorvision's) customer service has proven extremely inadequate and utterly indifferent, offering no solutions whatever. I've heard that some LCD monitors simply cannot be calibrated owing to the poor quality. Is this true? Is it true for this one? Does anyone have any suggestions for how to calibrate this monitor or do I have to buy a newer, and much more expensive one? Thanks!
