Remove the bad/flawed manufactured nozzles - not all nozzle clips

It says it wants to remove defective clips until the manufacturer figures out why they spill sometimes...not that they want to entirely remove them.

The nozzles were recently introduced in California and may have a design flaw.

In the last couple of months, 11 fuel spills have occurred around the state because of possibly defective clips.

"Because public safety is our No. 1 concern here, we wanted to make sure there are no further incidents, we want to minimize all risk, as much as possible," California Air Resources Board spokesperson Stanley Young said.

They want faulty equipment removed, is this a problem?

Haven't had those in many years in Massachusetts...

also, it sounds like it's only one type of nozzle, VST's.

No gas station on Maui has them. I thought they were just broken but it may be that they're illegal. It pisses me off.

But these are apparently defective... The thing is though, the mechanism that stops flow is separate from the clip. If you're holding the handle manually, the stopper can fail and keep pumping. So the "solution" they're proposing is to make you hold the nozzle yourself so when it does overflow you can let go.

Those auto-stops actually HELP the environment because they prevent over topping and vapors.

Every time I've seen the little pump keeper-going thing not work, someone just shoves the gas cap between the lever and the front of the handle.

this is just a stupid waste of time. I guess they have nothing better to do. assuming of the 3000 gas stations they have 8 pumps and all 8 use this clip. that's 24000 clips.

11 fuels spills reported occurred solely that's tied to this clip equals a 0.05% failure. I'm not even counting the possible number of times each clip is used in a single day. How many of these 11 spills are truly the result of these clips and not incompetence.

Also the story doesn't seem to get things straight. Is it the clips fault or the nozzles or some other mechanism? 99% of the story focuses on the clips. the very last sentence mentions when selecting the grade and fuel just comes out, which suggests the failure of a valve not being sealed.

Remove the bad/flawed manufactured nozzles - not all nozzle clips

Article in OP said:
But the California Air Resources Board is recommending 3,000 gas stations statewide with nozzles marked "VST" to remove those clips while agency works with the manufacturer. The nozzles were recently introduced in California and may have a design flaw. In the last couple of months, 11 fuel spills have occurred around the state because of possibly defective clips.

That seems to be what they are proposing.

For clarification for those who can't read/watch a video. They aren't removing defective clips, the nozzles are defective, they want to remove the clips as a fix because the CARB made all these gas stations swap to faulty nozzles so their solution to these pumps not shutting off when the tank is full is to remove the clips so you'll stop pumping when gas pumps all over your shoes.

You don't understand Maui, sadly. Filling your tank by actually filling it yourself is a big event in the day. You are thinking always about the future and where you want to get to, but the folk on Maui are already there. Next tank, stop the bullshit and just be there. All around you is Maui for Christ sakes. Wake the fuck up.

Yeah it really doesn't seem like that big of an issue at all. CARB is probably just trying to justify their budget.

Cheap gas and free full service in NJ FTW.
I hate getting gas in PA. No clips at all, and +$.30/gal.
NY is more expensive, but at least they have clips...

When a clip was not available, my gas cap has always worked in place of the clip. It is like they were designed for this purpose!

You do realize they would likely use this as a reason to justify removing the clip? They don't want you leaving the pump running unattended and gas stations here have signs telling you that.
