Backers of a proposed constitutional amendment seeking California’s secession from the U.S. can begin collecting voter signatures to qualify for the 2018 ballot, the secretary of state’s office said Thursday.

The so-called Calexit movement emerged within days of the upset presidential victory of Republican Donald Trump, who lost California by nearly 4.3 million votes. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that nearly one in three Californians support the state leaving the U.S.

Proponents have until July 25 to collect 585,407 valid voter signatures to qualify for the November 2018 ballot.

The proposed measure would strike language from the California Constitution defining the state as “an inseparable part of the United States of America, and the United States Constitution is the supreme law of the land.” If it passed, there would be a statewide special election in March 2019 to ask voters if they want California to become an independent country.

I support every person's right to self determination. Good luck with that, Calexit!

Morans.

This land is your land, this land is my land
From the Nevada Test Site to the New York Island
From the Yuma Desalinization Plant, to the Gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me.

Just doesn't flow.

As an Upstate NY resident can someone take NYC and Albany? They get Cuomo and the Legislature as compensation.

This is stupid. Secession is an issue settled in blood over 150 years ago. This is a waste of time and takes away resources from issues where genuine changes can be pushed for and enacted.

Considering that lower NY subsidizes upstate, I hope you don't mind the cuts in service that would result from such a change.

I would welcome the opportunity. There are 49 states managing without NYC and Albany Since they get the government we could do away with "three men in a room", something more than worth any financial consideration.

Just as dumb as people here in TX threatening secession.

Texas is already accepting political and religious refugees from California, this would be a positive step.

Most of the CA people I see moving here (and there are a ton) are doing it for the lower cost of living and the job market, not for political or religious reasons.

I would like to see a more inclusive and less log-jammed NYS government. Albany is a general clusterfuck - the problems of government won't be fixed by cutting our noses off.

But if we were going to split the state - you guys can keep Albany. They've done enough to impede stuff in NYC.

The best thing about Texas are the Texans.

NYC owns the governor and the governor owns the legislature and is only interested in emperor like rule. I'd like reform, but that's like saying save the cancer ridden nose although it poisons the body. Sometimes surgery is the only option likely to work.

LOL. That's hilarious. NYC does nothing of the sort - there might be some special interests that own those groups (like the Real estate lobby), but we definitely do not "own" them to any real degree.

Wrong, the 'best thing' about Texas is how far it is from anywhere important. The people there suck major donkey scrotum.

It takes an awfully broad brush to paint 27 million people with one swipe.

From my passing familiarity with Albany-NYC politics I'd say NYC wishes on a star nightly that they owned the governor.

Ok not Cuomo. Cuomo owns everyone else in his own mind. Expect him to run in 2020. Damn scary.
