Open Windows Explorer C: ... Select Tools, Folder Options, File Types
See if .EXE extension is listed ... it Should Not Be

If it is, delete it .. that will likely fix it .. keep a record of what you change,
remove or add .. that way you can put it back if you have to

The calculator should be here: C:\WINDOWS\I386\CALC.EXE

Hope it helps

Bruceb's solution should work. Try it.

It's probably the after-effect of an installation gone wrong.....

One other thing you might try, is deleting the shortcut to the calculator
in the Start Menu, Programs, Accessories'

Then, go to the location I mentioned above as to where the calculator is

Try IE again to see if still opens it .. if not, just recreate the Shortcut to
the calculator & add it back to Start Menu, Programs, Accessories

Let us know

I tried your first suggestion without any success . I then disabled Active-X controls and it seems to be working .
Now I'd like to know what causes this in the first place .
Thanks for the replies .

Tried an antivirus scan with a major-name antivirus product yet?

Try HijackThis
See if there is an entry for calc.exe and get rid of it.

If you are not sure about changing something there, Google it, DL it, scan and post a log here.

I've got a similar problem....

A while back I had an ATI card and radlinkerinstalled. I uninstalled the ati drivers, installed an nvidia card, and radlinkerwas still there. I uninstalled it, but its tab remained in display properties, albeit empty. All seemed acceptable...
That is until I installed windows xp pro over home. As it was installing, for whatever reason it decided that radlinker was a critical part of the OS. Unfortunately, I no longer had the install files, nor where they available on the Internet due to it being an older version. This caused it to bring up an "Installing radlinker" dialog whenever I ran ANY program. Eventually I went into the registry and deleted all references to radlinker .....which got rid of the prompting for a file location and reference to radlinker, however whenever I run any exe file the "Installing..." dialog box still pops up momentarily, and then disappears.

Pretty damn annoying and makes everything take longer to run, especially boot up. Any ideas how to kill it?

BTW, the exact box that pops up is says "Windows Installer: Preparing to Install."
