How do you calculate ERA in the following situation:

Bottom of the ninth and the score is tied
1st batter SO
2-5 batters walk
the fifth walk causes the winning run to score
game over

Is it a 1/3 inning with 1 earned run or a full inning?

How many outs did the pitcher make? That's the determination.

If he made no outs before walking the 5th batter, then it's 0 innings with 1 earned run.

he struck out the first batter

that's why I thought it was 1/3 inning. It's just that everything happened after first out and the game ended before a second out was made

That run is based on 1/3 of an inning.

If its his first pitching of the year, his ERA is 27.0.

So what happens if he doesn't get any outs and give up 3 runs in the 1st inning? Then his ERA is infinity! (obviously that would only be for that game...or if it was his 1st appearance of the season)

Yep, sometimes ERA is undefined.

He pitched another 1/3 of an inning and gave up no runs, so its 13.5.

FYI - this is my nine year playing his first year of little league. They are limited to 25 pitches per outing. And if they "walk" a player, that player's coach pitches to them until they hit it.

He's already stat obsessed... lol

Now that we've gone off-topic...

If this is your 9-year old's first year, did he already know the rules? This is also my 9 year old's first year but she doesn't know the rules and I don't know how much they go over at practice so I will be supplementing whatever knowledge she gleans from practices so I wanted to know how you taught your kid.

EDIT: She's actually 8 but she turns 9 during the season so she's considered 9.

don't expect a lot og high level coaching to go on. It's all about the fundamentals. Fortunately, baseball can be as simple or as complex as your kid is ready for and lends itself to incremental learning...

step 1. learn to throw
step 2. learn to catch
step 3. learn to catch then throw
step 4. learn what a force out is
step 5. learn to catch throw throw a runner out

this plus basic hitting is what they work on. You can teach more advanced situational things like checking runners and such. The quality of the coaching is important...
