argh, its been like 3 semesters since i've done this and i can't find my calc book...

derivative of 2 / (x^2 + z^2) with respect to x:

(-4x) / (x^2 + z^2)^2

correct?

Are we considering Z as a variable or constant? If Z is a variable then you need to use implicit differentiation.

its a variable, but this is a partial derivative with respect to x, so i believe we can treat z like a constant

If you are considering Z as a constant in the context of the problem, then your answer is fine, but if Z changes throughout the problem, then Z^2 would become 2*Z*(dZ) if you differentiate it.
