i have 2 monitors.

i have calc.exe hotkeyed to shift-ctrl-c

when i press it, the calculator shows up on screen 1. i want it to automatically start on screen 2 because i always have stuff on screen 1. and usually the stuff on screen1 covers up the calc. i hate dragging it to screen 2.

How how do i get calc.exe to start on screen2?

THX!

Typically windows remember where they were last. For instance, I dragged Winamp to a spot on my secondary monitor, now everytime I open it, it opens up in that same spot.

I think it depends on what graphics card you are using. Nvidia has a driver that actually helps with the placement and function of windows in a dual monitor configuration...i forget what the actual feature is called, but it's in the drivers.

Im using ATI. I am unaware of any feature that lets me set things in certain places, but something seems to notice my habits and places windows accordingly. So far so good.

Same thing happens to me.....I have two monitors, an ATI card and an NVidea driving the second monitor, configured as an extended desktop.

Only some progs will open on the second monitor, if you close the program on that display. WinAmp will do it, so will MBM dashboard, so will Zoom Player.

But, many will not and will insist on opening on monitor #1, no matter what. I think it is something in the prog itself that allows this, rather than any driver issue.

IMHO......

there's like no command line to force calc.exe to start up on monitor #2?

have you tried dragging it to monitor 2 and then closing it. Then reopen and it might open on monitor 2.

the featuer in ATI is called HydraVision.

linky

it might allow you to do what you are looking to do. There is also a correlary to this product from Nvidia, but I'm not sure what it's called.

As for a mixed card rig...I'm not sure...I would try to setup the driver for the card that is attached to the second monitor...just a guess though.

I was going to suggest holding down Shift while closing Calc, but that doesn't seem to change it, so it's time to fire up Regmon to see what Calc.exe checks when it starts. Oddly enough, it very thoroughly checks over the Audio Codecs installed on the system. It checks themes, number formats, what screensaver the system is using, makes several quereies about Winlogon, image file execution, and terminal server. But I didn't see anything in there concerning how it figures out where on the screen it is going to open. It's possible that it's integrated right into the EXE file itself.

Most likely it doesn't specify a preference, thus the window manager will open it whereever it pleases. (Actually, if you open several instances, you'll see that the windows will be tiled)

Some apps will store their closed position, and make use of this info when launched next. However, for apps that you might launch several instances of, this approach makes less sense.

And certainly, some video drivers comes with utilities that override the window manager's default behaviour.

It's app dependent. Calc was not written to remember it's position in a multimon environment. You need a 3rd party app that does that for you. Latest version of Multimon might do it.

Me personally I just use another Calc app that DOES remember it's screen position and is better than Calc. Tried a lot of them but Judy's TenKey works best for me because it has a paper tape feature.
