calc 3 help

I just need a little help in calc 3. All I am doign now is 3 space graphs. However, when i try to graph, everything looks funky. Maybe it's just the way I am doing it. First, I split teh graphs into three different planes (xy, xz, yz). For each plane not used, i just equate it to zero, thus giving me a 2d graph. I then put a general graph for each plane. After i get a graph of each plane, i put each different part in the three space graph and try to revolve each part top make a 3d picture. My problem is that the graph keeps looking messed up. Am i taking the right steps or am i just visualising teh graphs wrong?
 
I think I understand what you're doing...

But, wouldn't an similar situation be graphing in 2 dimensions by looking at the 2 one dimensional graphs - set the x = to zero and see what the graph looks like on the y axis, and set y = 0 to see what the graph looks like on the x-axis. Then, taking the x and y intercepts only and trying to see what the rest of the graph looks like.

I'm not sure how your teacher taught you to do it (maybe there's a reason you're doing it that way... that way would certainly work well for graphing a plane) But, if what you're graphing is more complicated, then I'd do a stack of x-y slices... start with z = 0, then plug in z = 1, then plug in z = 2 and get a series of cross sections of the graph... it may be easier to visualize that way too.

(plus, it'd be easier to do on a graphing calculator... set z = 0 and put the variable z in your equation... then just keep changing z and re-graphing.)
 
Please tell me that you're just graphing plain old planes... pretty please... I can't believe you'd try to examine a more complicated graph by looking at the xy yz and xz planes.
 
I dont know, but when i graph f(x,y)=2-x^2+y^2, I get a funnel type graph, or what i think should be a funnel type graph. Basically, i just grpah each plane and just rotate on the axis that was set to zero. Judging by your remarks, i am thinking i did it wrong.
