Hello...I just upgraded my box to a new ABIT KG7 with AMD XP 1700+ and 512 MB DDR PC2100 RAM.

I am experiencing the following problem after my 2 week "burn in" ownership so far:

After turning off the computer, and then
after the opening screen and RAM check, the system stops booting after the phrase, "Verifying DMI Pool Data......" A horizontal cursor just sits and blinks incessantly and nothing else happens.

I rebooted 4 times just to be able to get into Windows and write this email.

I can R & R the mobo with the seller but dont want to do that if there is a simpler fix.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Well, it's not a Windows issue, so you can rule that out. It's definitely hardware-based. Here are some of the tips Maxtor gives its customers (but they are general tips that don't have anything to do with Maxtor, specifically):

Verifying DMI Pool issues...

I think I'd try the second set of tips first and save the first (reformatting) for later.

Other things people suggest is to start with minimal hardware (memory, cpu/fan/heatsink, video, harddrive) and work your way up to full hardware load.

If reseting the BIOS does not do it, try rewriting your MBR if you can before resorting to reformatting. FDISK /MBR in win 9x, dunno what it is in 2k or XP.

Is your HDD still detected by the BIOS?

Go back into the BIOS and see if it is being detected! During bootup, do you see the HDD in the BIOS ATAPI pool of devices?

If not, it may be the problem!

If it is, you may need to rebuild the MBR.....

If using Win9x, Bootup with a Win9x boot disk, and after boot up (in DOS), fdisk /mbr from the command line.

If in Win2k/XP, you need to use a Win2k/XP boot disk and type the same!
