Caffeine addiction (from coffee)?

Is it possible to get so hooked on caffeine that a guy could get migraines or sick from not having it for a day? I'm wondering if I have or had a caffeine addiction.

The reason I think this might be the case is because of what happened recently. The other day I had a physical exam scheduled at the doctor's office and a requirement was that I not eat or drink anything for 12 hours prior since I was having blood tests performed. That was the first day in many months that I did not have any coffee. I usually drink one or two cups per day. EVERY day - weekdays and weekends. Around noon I noticed a mild headache/neckache coming on. By 3:00 it was so intense that I felt weak in the knees and even nauseous. It was so bad that I felt light-headed and had to lay down. I stayed in bed and eventually went to sleep. When I woke up at around midnight I felt fine. No aches or pains.

I've had this happen a few times before and I think the common denominator is that I didn't have coffee on those days.

Can a person get so hooked on caffeine that they can't function (like the state I was in the other day) after going just one day without it? Or am I barking up the wrong tree here?

A nurse friend told me that what I described sounded similar to someone coming off a narcotics addiction. It just doesn't seem plausible that the amount of caffeine in coffee would be strong enough to cause that kind of reaction when coming off of it.

By the way, I drink 1 - 2 cups of brewed coffee when at work - usually Starbucks or Mugsys. When at home I just use whatever instant stuff is laying around - either store brand or Folgers- whatever.

Cheap, drip coffee has a lot more caffeine that the fancy stuff they brew at starbucks. If you were drinking it consistently every day then suddenly came off it, it is very plausible that it caused your sickness. I have some pretty nasty headaches when I come off caffeine suddenly.

When i quit years ago i had horrible headaches for a few days. I started back up about 6 months ago. But instead of a heaping dose in the morning and one in the afternoon i stick to maybe a few a week in the afternoon.

One or two or even three to four cups of coffee every day is NOT a lot of coffee. Your symptoms sound a lot more like dehydration.

I drink 6 cups a day on average and am definitely addicted but, only psychologically. Well....I do get the occasional headache if I don't have coffee and the voices in my head tell me to kill a lot more people than normal...

A few years back I gave up a 6-7 cup-a-day habit, was completely useless for an entire day and had massive headaches for three days.

I got back on the stuff a couple years later and drink at least three cups a day now.

Cool. So I'm not the only one. 🙂

The last two days since this happened I cut down my caffeine intake by been drinking tea instead.

Tea is pretty heavily caffeinated too >_<

And I drink way too much soda and get annoying headaches if I haven't had any by early afternoon.

I usually drink 2-3 cups of coffee in the morning when I first get to work. If I dont drink coffee, i'll start to get a headache around 10am, and it wont go away unless I drink coffee or I take some tylenol.

Black Tea has less, Green Tea has less than Black Tea.

I probably consume 200mg daily, between Tea and 1 8-12oz coffee per day. I get very bad withdrawls after about 2 days without any caffeine.
