I'm normally for government intervention but in this case, I think we need to let economics make the change for us. Next year or the year after when regular is 5$ a gallon, CAFE standards will be superfluous because Prius' and Volts will be flying off the shelves.

As usual, the wealthy will remain unaffected but hey, we all need something to aspire to :).

..many states are considering enhanced yearly registration tax on hybrids to off set the lost tax revenue from fuel sales. Washington and Oregon are moving in that direction.

That's kind of odd. Don't most states give a tax credit for buying hybrids? I know they do in New Hampshire...

I for one have absolutely no sympathy for anyone who buys a moster SUV, there is no excuse for a vehicle getting 11mpg, and any vehicle that does should be placed in its own class and have its cost doubled with taxes (for leisure purposes not industrial).

I'll go as far as saying any vehicle that does not fit into a standard parking space with enough room to open the doors (anything bigger than a trailblazer, and that one's borderline) should not be allowed to drive in a city, only highways and rural streets.

There are far too many soccer moms driving under the speed limit in the left lane by themselves in escallades, expeditions and hummers. If morons like these were not driving these rolling tanks we would not need $20,000 worth of modifications to the sweet efficient european models to make them 'safe'.

The only thing that will smarten these people up is gas pricing like they have in europe, I'm almost going to be happy when gas hits $8 a gallon, we might start getting reasonable cars.

..when it's 8 dollars a gallon "like in europe" you and everybody else will be paying a hell of a lot more for all consumables. You personal grocery bill could easly bounce 30% or more.

What do you call this?

You ARE a P&Ner.

..."The M5 Touring will be offered in select European markets, including the U.K., but it's unclear if it will ever come to American shores."

..possibly due to CAFE standards??

No, completely nothing to do with CAFE. It's because most Americans don't want to buy station wagons or minivans.... they aren't 'cool' enough, or 'macho' enough. So the manufacturers have to decide if the potential sales numbers are worth carrying an additional model in this market.

There never was any part of CAFE that killed the station wagon, that is complete crap.

Unlike you I like choices and the free market, if a soccor mom want's to drive a school bus I'm all for it it's her choice.

It will get real interesting when we have to dispose off all the batteries that are in these POS hybreds.

So let's see how we "benefit" ...

A higher death rate in auto accidents
A exorbitant repair cost due to increased complexity of hybrids
A rise in insurance rates + retail prices
Massive battery packs no one's sure how to dispose of

Brilliant. We are poorer and less safe.

40% fuel economy increase is SO not worth it.

Why does the auto industry have to bear the brunt of oil conservation efforts?

Actually, it's probably because that one is based on the M5. It was my mistake to just pull the first link for BMW wagon I found, but I'd forgotten I was debating with a P&Ner and was pretty much wasting my time.

Oh this will definately get interesting, there's already a minor lead shortage, lithium is bound to follow soon, batteries and complexity are not the solution, using existing technology that is widely in use in other countries. I drove a FORD mondeo, on a track in england, the car got 45+mpg and was used to train people before you were given a ferari, lotus, whatever. It had tonnes of power, and got 45mpg, 6 years ago.

haven't u heard the latest news?
now it's global cooling NOT global warming, so please, all single drivers buy F350s, Yukons and Hummers and drive them non-stop - hopefully the green house effect will return and make the globe warm again
