I would like to get into 3d rendering and animations, but first I want to mess with a cad program for my new case designs and whatnot. Anybody have any good recomendations for a good CAD program. Price isnt much of an issue if the program is good, no more than 2000 I just wasted quite a bit on 3ds max.

AutoCAD for anything related to CAD design. Used AutoCAD for over 4 years and I've always enjoyed working with it. I believe the most current version is AutoCAD 2005.

Alibre is cheap and great. It comes with a 30 or 60 trial with 3D. It is about $750.

AutoCAD is too dead gum expensive.

Any idea where one might pick up an older version (13,14,15?) for cheap? I took a few classes on it back in HS, and wouldn't mind fooling around with it again, if I can find it for a reasonable (read:low) price.

if I knew that I would buy it :) Just order the demo, it costs nothing. Alibre

I really want Autodesk Inventor 8 or 9 but that is outrageous :).

search alibre cad design in Google, click the link at the top (advertising link) then click the "get a free comparison checklist" , sign up, then after that is done, click the Total Cost of Ownership calculator form then click on products, and then click on the request a 30 day trial logo (right side) and fill out the information (you must use real addresses) and you might get a gold logo with training CDs etc. They are very helpful.
