Caching DNS make problems with my ISP?

I am running a BIND caching DNS on my server at home. Originally, I thought a caching DNS was simply a DNS that looked at my ISP's DNSs and then cached a copy in its cache. Well, I guess I was wrong. I have now found out that this caching only name server works without even putting in any DNS ips in resolv.conf! My assumption is my server is accessing the root servers and is acting as a full fledged DNS, correct?

Also, would running this affect my ISP's DNS in any way?

I'm pretty sure you're correct. If you set it up correctly that is.

No, as all that you're doing is quering other servers. Or so I think.

I'll second that it doesn't affect the ISP's DNS servers ín any way. In fact it helps them by taking some of the load from it. They should actually pay you money for running a DNS! 😀

If you want more info it might be better to post this in the networking forum. It's a bit OT around here
