Cacheman: This "takes over" your PC, right? Is it reversible? RU using it?

Ah, I come up w/yet Another Stupid Question everyday. Oh well, that's what the forums are for!

A few individuals have recommended the Cacheman program (utility?) for me to use on my box. I checked it out; it looks promising. But I've a couple of questions:

1. How do I know if I need it or not? I know a system could always be faster, but how can I tell if I would benefit from using this?

2. Does this program "take over" your system? Kinda like Norton AV? Not that NAV takes over, but it is resident and active i.e. running in the background.

3. When you install Cacheman, does it "do things" to your HD that are irreversible w/o a format? I'd hate to install it, decide I don't like it and then find that "it's permanent" unless I reformat...perish the thought. Can U say "that'll take 8 hours...?"

So, if you are using this proggy or have used it, please let me know what you think about it. I usually don't install things like this w/o researching all the implications first. Thanks much and have a nice day. :)

i used it when i ran win9x and i feel it helped. it doesn't "take over" (it doesn't run in the background), nor does it make permanant changes. it is basically as if you edited the cache settings in the registry yourself, but this program does it for you. nothing irreversable and it will help windows use your memory better. i say go for it...

Personally, I think it's only worth it if you have 128MB of RAM or less. If you have more than 128MB of RAM, caching seems to work fine, although I don't do anything in Win98 other than play games.

I use cacheman for the last 2 years with my Win98 ,I also have 256mb of ram I think it does help,it`s also a small program that does not take over your PC & is very stable infact I`ve never had a problem with it,for a free program its great.

Btw it`s very simple to uninstall ,I`ve done this afew times when I`ve upgraded to the latest version.

another thing to do with win98 is to add the following line:
ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1
at the bottom of the [386enh] section in the system.ini file. it makes windows use your ram before it goes to the swapfile, and, since win9x is dumb about this stuff, i feel it helps. that is my experience but before you run and do it i think you should get a few more opinions about this from other knowlegdeable people...

Thanks for the tip, LedZep, but I did that last night! Really! See Here. I was leery about it at first, but folks I trust from this forum assured me that it was safe. It worked fantastically. Thanks and have a good day.
