OK,
I have a machine, with XP Pro. Now everything was fine for a year or so. Now last nite, I was using it and all of a sudden it just shut off. Well when i try to turn on, It just gets to the XP Pro screen, then reboots. I cant get to safe mode or anything. It just keeps rebooting and restarting. Any ideas, I have no idea and I need to get this machine fixed. Thanks

XP instead of BSODing just randomly restarts. Two things you can try. First, check your system event logs to see what exactly is the chokepoint, and then hit the system properties: environmental variables and uncheck the restart on crash box or whatever its called. See if that isnt of any help.

Good Luck,

Edit: Oh, didnt read the whole post. Just reformat dude. A full year out of a single format is way better than you should be expecting. I reformat every 3 months for optimal performance.

Have you tried to boot from your XP CD and Repair the Installation?

yeah. you loose all of your files. that's why you were inspired a year ago to install hard drives specifically for storing documents and movies... separate from your boot drive for this specific purpose... nm ;)

Yes... boot from the CD and select Repair Installation.

Follow the prompts.

Well, you can try that. The "R" option is for Recovery Console.

To repair the installation, hit F3 or whatever as if you want to install, and it will then detect your existing installation and ask if you want to repair it. That's the option you want.

This is really *not* necessary with an NT-kernel based OS, unless you don't take care of it and install lots of crap/spyware/adware/viruses/beta drivers on your machine (Win9x is a different story; it requires much more careful maintainence, and still can reach a point where you almost have to reinstall). Of course, if you never defrag or run spyware cleaners, or check to make sure you're not running tons of useless crap in the background, yes, your system's performance will tank after 6 months.
