cables not working well

I just got cable, and everything seemed to be working fine (speed wise) untill i started playing games. like, in counter strike, I get big lag spikes and then my ping will go down, then i will get big lag spikes again. I am sharing the cable connection through a netgear cable/dsl router, but even with the computer that i am sharing it with off, I still get the lag spikes. Any ideas on what my problem is?
