Cables for remote operation of KVM...

I'd like to be able to operate an LCD digital monitor, keyboard, and mouse remotely. I know this takes a KVM switch, but I have no idea where to get 1 or where to get the long cables to do this... I'd assume you have to get a amplifier for all the signals, right?

Caveman, i'm not really sure i know what you're asking or if you know what you're asking.

A KVM (Keyboard, Video & Mouse Switch), enables a person to use more than 1 pc while using 1 monitor, keyboard & mouse. There are cables that will plug in from the KVM Switch Box to each of the ports on the pc's and then one set of ports that your keyboard, monitor & mouse plug into...there's really nothing remote about it unless of course you use a wireless keyboard & mouse combo.

If you want to take a look at a large selection, go to NewEgg and go to the 'Input Devices' category. This will help you alot.

Thanks for info. I want to do exactly as you describe but the "main" PC may be approx 100 ft from the alternate PC "as the wire flies". I need some very long mouse, keyboard, and DVI signal cables to make this happen...

I found a 50-100 foot DVI cable but, I can't seem to find mouse and keyboard cables that long...

Q: Know of any vendors that supply long mouse and keyboard cables...?

This is for my own house that's being built right now... The computer will be in the upstairs bonus room but I want a "dumb" terminal in my office downstairs.

Q: Do I need signal boosters on any lines to (max distance would be 100ft)

Cave, now that you've explained your needs a bit better, let me ask, have you considered a network? especially if your house is neing built, you could 'hard wire' it oreven use a wireless router.

btw, i've never heard of a KVM cables that long, a network would let all the pc's 'talk' to eachother.

OK... To set things straight... I had the terminology wrong... A KVM is to let one mouse, keyboard, and video screen talk to multiple computers... What I'm trying to do is the opposite... One master computer (upstairs) with a "dumb terminal" in a downstairs room, about 100 ft away...

Yes, this functionality for the long keyboard, mouse, and video cables spoken of above is in addition to a home network with CAT6, CAT5, and RG-6 drops to each room of the house...

I think that the best way to do this would be to get some old machine (something around Pentium III level should be fine and you may even be able to get it for free), set it up downstairs, and then install RealVNC on both machines. This will allow you to do pretty much everything except for video, sound, or 3D gaming on the upstairs machine
