Does anyone have a clue why Motorola has covered the 'CableLabs® Certified' logo on the SURFboard SB4200 boxes? While their web site declares that the product is "DOCSIS 1.0 and 1.1 CableLabs® Certified", and older boxes do display the logo, the most recently produced ones have it covered with a paper sticker the same color as the box. I suspected that a hardware or firmware change necessitated recertification before they were permitted to display the logo and asked Motorola's support.
They said: "The SB4200 has not lost it's certifications. They have phased out the DOCSIS standard and have renamed it CableLabs. That is the reason for the change in the labels on some newer boxes. The certification is based on the same standards".
This sounded bogus, & I replied to them: "Your answer conflicts with the information available to me:
1) The logo that has been covered on the newer boxes says "CableLabs® Certified", and makes no mention of "DOCSIS". The logo I refer to is at http://www.cablelabs.com/lib/img/certqual/CertifiedLogo.jpg
2) On December 19, 2002 the CableLabs® web site <http://www.cablelabs.com/> announced the new DOCSIS 2.0 standard. While I understand that the SB4200 does not conform to this new standard, if it was certified under the earlier 1.0 & 1.1 standards and still conforms to those older standards, I do not see why a "CableLabs® Certified" logo has been covered on the new packaging. I am not able to find any mention on the CableLabs® web site of the DOCSIS standard being 'phased out'. From what I read DOCSIS is the standard and CableLabs® is the organization that maintains that standard. An analogy to your answer would be that USB 1.1 products would now cover the USB logo because the USB 2.0 standard is now out. If you can supply me with a link or documentation to support your assertion I would appreciate it.
They never answered me again, so I asked CableLabs. They replied: "I am not sure what's going with Motorola and their label, but it sounds as though it's worth some investigation! DOCSIS is alive and well, and a very strong standard with over 300 products now certified. We are still certifying 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 versions of the product, all of which may bear the same CableLabs certified sticker. We have not de-certified any products at this point, but products that obtain a software or hardware change without obtaining recertification may not use the label".
I passed this back to Motorola's support and still haven't received another reply.
