Cable Vs. DSL

My parents are considering switching our ISP form Cox Cable (9.0 Mbps) To ATT Yahoo! DSL. I told them to not, but I want some people to back me up.

Have them call and ask what speed the DSL company will guarantee. Except for people that live right next to the CO or a booster device, DSL is crap speed in comparison.
I hate paying Charter for their overly lopsided 3Mbps/256kbps, but I wouldn't trade it for the 768kbps/384kbps that Verizon quoted to me.....especially since I am 5 miles from the CO.

In my experience, cable tends to be faster and slightly more reliable, however the cable company is also a bunch of bastards. I use DSL.

Welcome to AT Network Forum.

I have a 3Mb/sec. DSL, and a 768Kb/sec. Cable Internet. I did not noticed that the Cable services is faster.

Charter is garbage imo.
Unfortunatley I am stuck with them 🙁

I have VERIZON DSL and my speed never passed 350kbt, what kind of servise do you have? Paying myself $30 for a month with one year agreement.
How much cable cost and what's the speed?

The advice is to shop in your geographical are and see who is offering the Best deal the bandwidth that you need.
As an example I have DSL in few locations at which very high bandwidth is not really very important.
So I have there 3Mb/sec. DSL (Verizon, and ATT) for $24 a month.
In my main Office in NYC I need Speed. RR offers 6Mb/sec. for $44 a month.
There is No general FIOS or other similar services deals in NYC, in most locations if one need more than 6Mb/sec. you have to subscribe to a Business account and the cost is well over $100 a month.
I am happy with both types of Internet delivery (Cable and DSL) and do not see any functional difference between one and the other.
However while the above describe the situation in NYC and the Tri state area, it is not applying to other areas in the US.
This is why general statements along the line the one is better than the other are silly at best.

It depends a lot on your area. In general I'd say go with cable because of the distance issues with DSL.

A lot of people don't like Comcast, but in my area I get 6 Mbps downstream all the time, but only 384 Kbps upstream. What's nice is Power Boost... seems to kick in all the time now, not just during offpeak hours. I get 10-12 Mbps downstream, and it now seems to work for upstream bandwidth too as I've been able to send files over AIM at 1.5-2 Mbit.

I don't know if ATT has a local telephone exchange to be honest....the tearts one is about 6 or 7 miles away

Cable is no doubt faster, but download speeds will also vary much more depending on things like the time of day & overall network traffic... DSL can also cost quite a bit less.
