Cable TV streamed to PCs?

I'm looking for something that will take your existing cable TV, and stream it to clients on your LAN, like through a web browser or something, maybe with Flash - has anyone seen anything like this? With the quality of Netflix's streaming, I was hoping that someone would be doing this, or have some device that had a built in webserver that could do this. Seems pretty practical, with many people having lots of real estate on their monitors (24-30" lcds), a window with a browser open would be slick, plus being browser-based wouldn't limit it to hardware or OS type, etc. Anyone seen anything like it? Think you could use something like that?

*shrug* - not sure which forum this belongs in, not exactly hardware or software, or home theater, and if it doesn't exist it's more off-topic anyway, hmm. Anyway, what do you think?

I had a capture card that let you stream cable onto your PC....it was awhile ago so I don't remember the brand/model, but it worked well. I'm sure it would be pretty simple to output that to a network streaming application, maybe Windows Media Encoder or something similar.

orb takes a shbuzzload of resources on the server machine. i mean, GREAT idea, the client interface is a bit bloated and server hogs resources, but ist free

the interface isnt bloated... well not for a healthy system (which you should use with orb anyway). but the program will take over any machine its on. i use it on my htpc though, its only a p4 2.4ghz so if that can run it most pc's can.

orb overall is fantastic... and free!

athlon xp 64 dual-core 4.0ghz, 3gb ram
i leave it running and only 1 friend connects to it

often times i find the machine going at 80% cpu utilization, even if NOONE is connected

i like the itunes-like client interface, but it could be made more streamlined

agreed, its nice to have but there are better options out there. but OP does want cable tv streamed. I don't think orb can do that.
