Cable Spliter question

Does having a high quality cable spliter matter when using a cable modem? I need to use one, because i have 1 cable jack. I heard an RCA gold plated one at Radioshack (28 bucks) is what is prefered over the cheap ones.
 
you need a cable splitter that goes up to at least a 1GHz frequency. radioshack sells a 3 way splitter like that for $17 I believe
 
yup. I used one of those gold plated RS ones for a few years, then started having trouble, the cable guy came out, and replaced it with one of his own, and got a few more points on whatever instrument he read the signal with.

btw, he attempted to steal my RS splitter as well, but called up his boss, and he drove back and returned it. what a POS.
 
They deff help, Ive used the Monster 2Ghz ones... and they do a MUCH better job then the other $5 ones. If you ever pull it apart, youll see a basic RCA one or something of that sort.... its just 2 wires soldered to the single wire... nothing special. The other ones like RS or Monster have a IC in there and stuff.

This is the one I use... the RS one will do the job most likely too without any major signal loss. I did notice a slight signal difference going up to the one I linked, but nothing major. Just as an example... their 1Ghz one has -3.5db loss... the gold 2Ghz one has -3.4db... no major difference,
 
I don't think there will be much difference from 1 GHZ to 2 GHZ for a spliter. I run my cable tv off one, and cable modem off the second.

Debatable, I have both high & low quality cable splitters for my home & didn?t notice any different from either ones. However, the Radio Shack people claims that the higher quality ones give better signals at higher frequency (the run from the splitter in my house is 50?).

I have also talked to the local electronic parts store & they claim that under their tests that they have conducted, there is little or no different between brands of splitters, however they do stock the full price range of splitters because the consumers want them (a friend of mine is a electronic repair man for over 26 years work there).

 
like I said in my first post, you need at least a 1GHz capable splitter. Anything under that, your cable modem will not operate. I have the 1GHz RadioShack 4 way splitter and I have my cable modem and 3 tv's attached to it. everything works beautifully.

He means up to 1000.... anything rated at 1Ghz splitter will handle 5-1000.

I guarantee you his intention was not to "steal" your crappy-ass RS splitter. I worked for 3 years as a cable modem technician and one of the first things you learn on the job is that gold-plated or Radio Shack = cheap sh*t. We would carry around tons of better splitters, so there's no reason why he would have to steal yours. It's natural for a cable guy to remove them because they're garbage.

Example: Don't get one that says 5-900mhz

Maybe this is just like brain surgery, and all those brain surgeons are ripping us off!!!
 
If you spend more then $10 then you over paid.

Get a decent 5-1000Mhz one as others have said. Heck if you hace a cable modem go to the cable company and tell them you need a splitter for it and they will probable just GIVE you one.

I know its not as good a quality as some, but most people in here are recommending it.

That's what I was thinking. I went out and met up with the cable guy who hooked my service up last time (he needed to come out and remove a signal blocker or something from the outside box) and asked him for a few lengths of terminated cable, which he made for me while standing next to the work van. Then he asked how many splitters I was using, so I told him I was using two. He handed me two new splitters (a 3-way and a 5-way) and told me, "whatever you're using now, throw them away and use these."

I figure the cable guys are the pros in this situation, so whatever they use, that's what I'll use, especially when they're willing to give it to me for free.
 
I was a cable modem tech, and I don't like the monster splitters. Had plenty of problems with them, even though they are rated beyond the necessary specs. The cheap-ass splitters that the techs use are definitely the best. Ask nice and most techs are happy to give you spare parts.
