cable service...possible 2 cable modems?

hey guys,

Is it possible to have 2 cable modems hook up in a big house? A friend of mine has a BIG house and needs Internet connection on 2nd floor and his office in the basement. His house is HUGE but is not wired for network.

He considered wireless but 1 wireless router will never cover the entire house/floor, not even close.

Any idea would be appreciated.

Yeah, that's not the ideal solution at all.

Either hook up a phoneline or powerline network, or go wireless and put a couple access points around the house to expand it's coverage. Either way would work fine.

i think he's asking if its possible to have 2 cable modems but only pay for one service. If he is, then the answer is definitely no. If you hooked up a second cable modem it wouldn't work without paying for a second ip.

He has considered wireless solution but the 2 PCs/laptop are 2 floors apart and 1 is on the east side of house, the other is on the west side.

Just so I understand this, Technically, one can have as many wireless (linksys) Routers as you want to cover an entire area which in his case the whole house?

One wireless router will probably cover the whole house no problem, unless he is Richie Rich. In which case, he can just ride his little train till he gets close enough to the WAP.

hahaha

I'd pony up the coin for a certified cabler to come in and wire up a couple cat5 drops and then put up a couple AP's off the wired drops(or just run off the drops themselves).

Cost of second cable modem a month $45
Cost to have a cabler put cat 5 on each floor - $500?

In less than a year he'll make up the difference.

If he's really lucky, the builders dropped in an extra line of cat5 when building, or are only using a single pair of the 4 for phone service. That leaves another two pair that *could* be used for running back and setting up a makeshift patch panel that he could distribute back out to the rest of the house. Just match up the pairs behind each wall plate and put a wall jack on it and a new plate and you are set.

Just really depends on what he has to work with.
